Last Saturday I used my Z8 to shoot ~800 pictures at 10FPS lossless raw of my friend's band playing at a pub, and was over 40% battery remaining at the end. This was 2 sets over 45 min each. Just stills, no video and using mostly my 70-200 2.8 lens. I had 2 spare batteries in my backpack ready to go if needed. The nice thing is the batteries are small and light, so carrying spares is no big deal.

The Z8 is a masterpiece. Originally I laughed at the idea of fully electronic shutter. Then I tried it; one shot and I thought to myself: "Ok. Nikon know what they're doing." I just wish the mirrorless world can find a solution to extreme exposure. You will never be able to shoot a solar eclipse or laser show without frying the sensor. Which is why I will keep the D850 and D750 forever.

I can see a big improvement in the auto focus. In the past, some camera brands would have saved these features to put in their next body and made you buy that camera instead of updating the firmware. Nikon has been doing a great job in giving us new features and keeping us happy. I'm still waiting on another firmware update for my z6 II. That may not happen until the z6 III comes out.

I have the Z6ii and Z7ii. I only bought the Z8 recently because it has better AFC. Most of my paid gigs and events are people moving very quickly, and I was missing some shots. However, I only use the Z8 for the fast events. The images are no different to my Z7ii. I did a model portfolio shoot two weeks ago and on this last Sunday, I shot 3 models on the beach - all with my Z7ii.

The Z8 is a great camera. I find being able to only use electronic shutter without compromise is extremely useful (being able to shoot silently for events and concerts without banding artefacts from lights and in screens that I used to be a big problem with slower sensors when shooting in silent mode) and the Z8 is the cheapest camera wit a fully stacked sensor on the market.

Nikon Z8 struggles hugely at events once the lights are turned WAY down and people are dancing. I have yet to find a setting where it doesn't miss MANY images. I even switched over to MANUAL focus the other night after much disappointment. I swear my d850 did way better. Is there some way to tackle this? I bought the Z8 as a backup for my Z9 and I regret it. It is a great camera, but it is nowhere near as good as the Z9. I have both, but when I go out to shoot, I always grab the Z9. I have heard some people claim it is a mini-Z9, but they must have never used a Z9. The Z9 has all day battery life. Even shooting weddings, posed photos and the entire reception.

Any z camera with expeed 7 (50ii, 5ii, 6iii, Z8, Z9) has a dedicated bird detection algorithm and is fabulous in the scenarios you described. 180-600 is a great lens, I’m in fact using 200-500 with a ftz on a z50ii to get the 1.5 crop factor in my favour as I generally photograph birds. Z8 and Z9 have good batteries and you can buy a few spares as well.

In my opinion, the Z8 is huge and very heavy. The combination of the Z8 and the (old) 24-70mm f/2.8 weighs around 600g more than my Sony A7RV with the Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II. I also think that the Sony's autofocus is significantly better when it comes to recognizing a human or animal eye. The Nikon Z8, however, is clearly superior for video recording.

I’d say price and weight aren’t the only downsides of this camera. The 45 megapixels can actually be a problem for a lot of people who still believe that more megapixels automatically mean better image quality, which isn’t true. I did find out that the OM 1 mark ii has an integrated and graduated ND. that can be manipulated on the viewfinder. I would be looking for that feature on Nikon's next-gen cameras. Fingers crossed.

Disappointing that Nikon is working on a Z8 II while ignoring a smaller Z7 III with better image quality. Whatever its good qualities, the Z8 is a brick with limited dynamic range relative to the competition. I don't doubt that some users value readout speed over DR, but not every photographer needs a camera that shoots 100fps (or whatever).

After 2 years of shooting video in weddings I have to say that the measures I had to take in order to avoid overheating are out of this world. I have to deactivate face direction, sometimes stabilization even when using gimbal and open all the ports to anticipate heat. Even I bought a dummy battery to avoid building heat inside the camera.

My Z6ii which is over 4 years old and has shot tens of thousands of images, looks brand new, Ditto for my Z8 and Z7ii. If i ever have to hold my cameras with bare hands now, I freak out and grab the gloves. The acids in our sweat reek havoc with the faux leather on cameras. Screens are fine on all my 3 cameras.

The Nikon Z8 is basically a mini Nikon Z9 at a huge discount. It's an incredibly capable camera and stands head and shoulders above the competition. Capable of capturing immensely detailed stills at up to 120fps, slow motion video, and 8K 60fps RAW video video recording, the Z8 is clearly better than any other mirrorless camera on the market.

I can’t recommend the z8 enough. I keep it with me everywhere I go. I have a Z6ii as well, mainly for night sky and portrait photography (carry extra lenses on it). I shoot wildlife mainly - so I keep a 400mm prime on the z8. It’s fast, sharp, and versatile. Good luck!

I have been using my Nikon Z8 foe almost a year so I now have a very good understanding of it's strengths and weaknesses when it comes to wildlife photography.

Posting this as an indication of Nikon Z8 reliability and build quality as I have had no issues with either and they have never been serviced by Nikon in any way! Amazingly great, especially with the 600pf for bird photography for the majority of usage counts.

Hi Kieran, Got mine last week, brilliant and very well made, just like the one for my Z7II. On a completely and rather annoying subject the Z8 recall! My body is in the recall numbers, to be honest it seems like everyone is.

Z8 is just incredible, especially if you are a true photo-video hybrid shooter. I had both the z9 (great but bulky) and the z6iii great but didn’t like the swivel display plus buttons position too different from the z8.

As for the Z8, I think this price point is too high for those that are using Z6 or Z7 to justify the large jump in price. Well, I guess I will wait to see what the final price will be when Nikon releases the Z8. Cheers.

But thankfully, the uh event went smoothly and the Nikon worked fantastically in that scenario, as did the two lenses that I initially got for the system. So, uh we'll talk a little bit more about some of the stuff again specifically I like and dislike or have some challenges with with this camera.

Glad I invested 2 Nikon Z9 cameras as the Z8 is pretty much the same thing. If the Z8 had a 61 mp sensor and a HSL control feature in the camera's picture control settings I may have considered buying one.

Z8 is a great choice also though as it’s lighter and easier to gimbal. Like you mentioned it’s a personal preference, I’ve always like the chunkier bodies and brick like nature with the bigger battery.

There would be no reason to ever use the D500 over the Z8 other than nostalgia. If you put the Z8 into DX mode you have the same "750mm" FOV and same pixels per area (reach) as you do using the D500.

In my opinion, the Z8 is one of the world's very best cameras. It was brilliant when it came out, and with firmware updates, it's got a lot better as time has gone by. And now it's a bit cheaper!

All that said my Z8 burned up a card that should have been fine and was recommended. I nearly lost a lot of important stuff. I was shooting nraw. The sensor of the z63 and ZR runs much cooler.

Z8 is better than z6 in foto and video but z9 is better than z8 for filmers as it does not overheat as fast as z8 even tough it has the same specs. In the end you get what you pay for.

The weak point of the Z8 autofocus is in my opinion single shot people photography with eye af. Taking pictures more from the side might focus the wrong eye or the chin, the ears.

Im currently using Z8 and 180-600mm lens the total budget cost the price of an R5ii. So in my opinion, the Z8 is the best when it comes to the price to performance ratio.

I don't see, or feel anything "cheap" about the Z8, but I guess that's subjective. I've had mine since December 2023 and it's holding up just fine.

Z8 is such a fantastic camera, a classic Nikon approach. I still, after all this time, don't see anything even remotely interesting as it.
