This mode tells the camera to focus on the subject when talking, then focus on the product when it's raised up in the frame, then back to the subject when the product is lowered in the frame. What makes this camera so popular is how easy the menu is and how affordable it is. Just holding this camera, it is tiny. So, you can easily slip this in a small bag or like a coat pocket or something. However, it's kind of weird if you have a huge lens. Like, I shot a basketball game with this, and I had this huge 70-200 on here, and it was just like weighing it down and it was super unbalanced.

But, if you are just really into photography and you just want a pure better raw image quality that, you know, which you will later take time to edit yourself, then I still think that the Canon R50 is worth considering. I've quickly come to love it. It feels like I'm doing something illegal or immoral, getting such wonderful pix with the tiny camera and huge pro lens. It's a wonderful successor to the M50 which was super in its own right. I'm so glad that Canon has put a lovely sensor in the R50 and that it handles eye tracking AF so well, with the right settings. I love the Canon R50, but with that said, I already own 3 high end Canon cameras for my professional work. However, I chose the R50 because with the adapter, I can still use all my EF and EF-S lenses on it. The main reason I bought the R50 is for street work with my R24mm f/2.8 which comes out to about 38mm on APC. Perfect for street photography IMHO.

Paired to the 8000 digital camera above, which I have included as number two on this list, the R50 is approachable and practical for everyday shooting and learning. I own an R8 and an R50. the R50 is so good as a travel camera. It has a great sensor, and the camera is so small. 28mm lens on the R50 and you can totally fit it in the pocket and you're set for street photography. It’s small and light yet comfortable in your hand , and while somewhat shy on physical controls, the excellent touchscreen interface largely compensates for this. It also delivers consistently attractive JPEG files direct from the camera.

If you're upgrading from a phone, want gorgeous photos instantly, want a tiny travel camera, and absolutely refuse to miss focus, buy the R50. It removes all the friction. It just takes the picture. And if you want to actually learn photography, shoot handle video without puking, or ever upgrade your lenses without going broke, stay far away.

Two big problems with the R50 related to stills. And both of these are not a huge deal unless you are into wildlife photography or a serious photog who likes complete control over your kit. 1. It only has one dial so running in full manual mode has a horrible workflow. Set your shutter speed, then hit a button, then set your aperture, then hit a button, then set your ISO.

And that's why I cannot recommend the R50 without reservations because when you need to move fast, when you need to make quick adjustments, the R50 can slow you down. So yes, the cramped buttons and missing back dial are the biggest issues. But in terms of image quality, the R50 is great. It's basically a smaller R10.

R50 is interesting. It’s 15 fps RAW. But the buffer fills in 7 shots. So really, it can only shoot 15 fps for a half a second. I have seen people confused and frustrated about this when they purchased the R50 for the high speed shooting. JPEG only or even CRAW you get some extra buffer space. Guessing many (most?) R50 buyers are jpeg shooters though.

My girlfriend and I have been really enjoying it. We mainly use it for car photography and to capture the places we visit while traveling. The size and weight make it super easy to carry around, and it fits perfectly in a small Lowepro shoulder bag with an extra lens and a couple of spare batteries. It’s very straightforward to use.

The one thing that the R50 is missing is the one lens that made the M50 a category killer: the EF-M 22 mm f/2.0 STM. Until and unless Canon releases an RF mount equivalent, the R50 is an also-ran. Right now, the M50 MkII with the 22 mm lens is still unbeatable for a compact camera with a proper viewfinder.

I love my R50 and yes, I use an external monitor. SmallRig now sells an R50 cage. With a mini-rig and and a 90 degree micro HDMI cable, I have found it to be comfortable to use. Having dual pixel autofocus in 4k without additional crop makes the R50 a pretty nifty camera.

The way I see these cameras is as a very advanced mirrorsless line of the Rebels. Not really good enough for high end professionals, but commonly too expensive for beginners.

I do have both R50 and R7, I use the R50 mainly for JPEG and street photography or general none important photography. The R7 is for more dedicated semi-pro photography.

If you are primarily interested in still photography, you should look at a used 5D mark III, 6D mark II, or a 1Dx, which are in the same general price range.
