Rega Planar 3 RS Edition

A Athens Pro Audio Article

The Rega Planar 3 may not be the most expensive turntable on the market, nor the most visually striking — but it is one of the few that have truly earned legendary status, and not by accident. Its simplicity, mechanical logic, musicality, and Rega’s unwavering consistency have made it a benchmark for generations of listeners. If you want a turntable that doesn’t show off but instead lets the music speak, the Planar 3 is your answer. Every record gains depth, energy, emotion — and in the end, that’s what truly matters.

This stunning dark brushed metallic plinth, edged in high gloss black creates a stunning platform for the iconic Planar 3. The RS Edition includes a custom matched Neo MK2 PSU with each motor vibration circuit hand tuned to each individual motor. This low noise 24v motor drives the sub platter via our Reference EBLT drive belt for ultimate accuracy in speed control. Rega Planar 3 RS Turntable – This Might Be The Best Value Turntable for Serious Vinyl Lovers!

A Avforums Ed Selley · reviewer

The result was the best turntable (just) under a grand available and even a price rise hasn’t really dented its ability. As we’ll cover, the Planar 6 RS tweaks this recipe slightly but the idea that you get more for your money than would otherwise be the case is still present and correct. Of course, at twice the price of the Planar 3 RS it needs to be very good indeed so we need to crack on and see if it is or not.

The Planar 3 sits just below the middle of Rega's range of turntables with various guises of the P1 and P2 below and the P6, P8, and Naiad above. There's an RS version that has a brushed aluminum plate laminated to the plinth to add rigidity, the Neo Mark 2 power supply upgrade, an individually tuned motor, and the ND5 moving magnet cartridge as standard. Unfortunately, the price is £1,100, and even though no doubt it represents better value, I'm keeping strictly to my sub-£1,000 budget this year.

The Rega Planar 3 RS Edition took everything that we liked about the standard Planar 3 and elevated it to new heights. As a newly crowned 2025 What Hi-Fi? Award winner and a Product of the Year , it's a beautifully made turntable that has set the benchmark for insight and entertainment at its particular price point. Beating it, then, will take some doing.

Talk about value!

A gap at the £1000 level saw the Planar 3 receive a series of upgrades to become the Planar 3 RS and the result was sufficiently compelling that it received an ‘Exceptional’ badge from us. A similar gap at £2000 sees the Planar 6, the model up from the 3, receive the same treatment.

To gramofon bardzo muzykalny. I właśnie to słowo – „muzykalność” – wracało do mnie za każdym razem. Nie analizowałem nagrania – słuchałem go. Nie szukałem detali – one po prostu były, bez nachalności, bez przesady. Pojawiały się jako naturalna część przekazu. I to działa.

The Planar 3 RS is an excellent turntable that makes listening to yoru vinyl collection a fun and enjoyable experience. There is competition from the Pro-Ject Debut Evo 2 , which is more affordable and a brilliant listen on its own.

A complete, optimised Planar 3 system in one purchase.

A Audio T Brighton · reviewer · Jun 2026

The audience was pleasantly surprised at how clearly the Rega Planar 3/ND3 portrayed the energy of Taxman by The Beatles. Details and dynamics were in abundance, but the word "crude" was mentioned. That perhaps sounds harsher than intended, because in isolation the combination is rather good. It was only when placed alongside the next upgrade that a clearer picture emerged of where improvements could be made. A rough diamond, so to speak!
