A more powerful version of our “Best Budget” pick, the Hoverair X1 Promax impressed me for three key reasons: its programmed flight patterns, durable exterior, and a highly compact foldable design. Many drones have some pre-recorded flight patterns, but the Promax has a whopping 15 options, which go a long way to helping you do advanced camera work, even if you aren’t a pro operator. I was able to use it for far more dynamic shots as well as put it in bike mode to follow me while I rode.

That drone is flying itself. That means I am free to get really cool shots of me riding like this. And I don't have to do anything. Now, while this little thing might look like other drones, it's easier to think of it as a small flying action camera. You don't need a controller or a pilot. You just hit this button, launch it, and you go off on your ride, and it tracks you as you go. Now, I've tried tracking myself with a drone before, and let's just say it didn't go great.

This one's for the man who wants to document everything he does: The HoverAir X1 Pro Max is an 8K-capable camera-equipped drone that follows him pretty much anywhere. It’s small and light (0.42 pounds), launches from the palm of your hand, and folds up to store in a pocket. The camera features a 107-degree field of view and is capable of following him from behind or the side, as well as dolly-tracking from the front. The standard HoverAir X1 is $300 cheaper and still pretty capable.

Not with the HOVERAir X1 PROMAX, an action camera that’s small enough to slip in a pocket. The device flies alongside users as they carve down a ski slope or run across a ridgeline, shooting 8k video and tracking them using AI. Built-in sensors help avoid collisions, but it’s also made from an aerospace-grade material that’s flexible and tough enough to survive an inevitable crash.

The HoverAir X1 ProMax (7/10, WIRED Recommends) might be just the ticket. This pocket-sized drone with automated flight is perfect for capturing quick aerial selfies or dutifully following along as you walk, cycle, or skate through a picturesque landscape, producing video (up to 8K resolution) and photos (up to 48 MP) that can be shared to social media right away.

This drone follows you with impressive accuracy, contract subjects moving up to 26 mph, and keep you perfectly framed the entire time. 26 mph is far faster than I would ever be running. So, runners out there, I think you'll really appreciate this drone. Let's talk about video specs. This thing shoots in crisp 8K at 30 frames per second. But if you want buttery smooth slow motion footage, it can also shoot at 60 frames per second in 4K. you want that dramatic slow motion, go all the way up to 120 frames per second in 4K or 1080p.

What this is able to capture is pretty gamechanging. And the footage is super usable. really beautiful. You can shoot stills with this. You can enter that manual flight mode and frame up shots, get some really cinematic images and footage with this. You get about 15 to 20 minutes of flight time per battery, and the batteries are super small and charge pretty quickly.

But the Pro and the Pro Max here have some really impressive specs. So, I figured that it was time that I put it to the test myself. And the question I had was whether something this small really can come close to a full-size drone with a remote in terms of quality. And so, over the past few months, I put it through the ringer, flying it in some heavy conditions and at altitude. First on the Tour de Mont Blanc, then down at Mammoth Lakes, and finally in Peru.

Whether you are running, cycling, skating, hiking, or capturing fast-paced outdoor adventures, the Hoverair keeps up remarkably well while maintaining smooth and stable footage. I tested several tracking modes, including follow mode and side track, and the experience feels surprisingly smooth and natural. Instead of constantly thinking about controlling a drone, you can focus entirely on your activity while the Hoverair handles the filming. This makes it especially useful for solo creators, athletes, and outdoor enthusiasts who want professional-looking tracking shots without needing a dedicated camera operator. Of course, image quality is very important to me.

The first reason this is the perfect travel and vlogging drone is because it's tiny and extremely light. My iPhone weighs in at g, while the Hover Air X1 Pro Max weighs in at just 194 g with the battery included. Because it's so light, it adds barely any weight to your backpack if you're hiking with it or your luggage if you're traveling with it. It's almost like it's not there. And it's not much bigger than an iPhone either. In fact, it's so small I can comfortably fit it in the pocket of my shorts and go about my day without really even noticing it, which is something that can't be said about just about any other drone.

As for the actual following capabilities of this drone, it actually really surprised me. It basically never lost me as a subject and has an indoor mode, which I tested here. And I thought then as I do now, there is no other drone that can match it for speed, durability and its tracking capabilities. Now add to this the beacon and you've got a combination of hardware that I don't think that any other drone manufacturers can come close to matching, let alone beat. So I'm at the UK's top mountain bike center close to where I live called Afan Argoed and it offers 100 km or around about 60 to 70 miles of the best purpose-built trails and single tracks in the world.

Nonetheless, don’t write off the HoverAir X1 fully, as it might probably do some issues that the majority drones can’t: fly indoors, fly close to folks, file sound, and fly completely hands-free (no app, no controller wanted). This drone is much less of a drone and extra of a self-flying digicam (which is even on how the corporate markets it). In case you are a vlogger, who’s on the lookout for one thing sensible, on the go, and never too involved with excessive picture high quality, then this is likely to be for you. Right here is my full HoverAir X1 evaluate — displaying off a small folding drone that may take video and snapshots hands-free.
