The Dreame L40S Ultra is also worth considering since it’s basically just a slightly more budget friendly version of the X50 Ultra, so if you don’t need ultra-high threshold crossing or first-person remote control, the L40S Ultra gets you very similar performance for quite a bit less money.

And I've got to say, after using it for over a week, the new L40S Ultra is a great robot vacuum. It is jam-packed with so many features and new technology borrowed from their highest end of robot vacuums. Things like side reach, mop extend, obstacle avoidance to make sure you don't pick up any toys and get stuck for any reason. Class leading levels of suction power and hair detangling.

The Dreame L40s Ultra AE is a lot more than a tiny vacuum that bounces around your house. It features incredible suction power and a built-in mop so it can tackle just about any mess you throw at it. Plus, the advanced base station means it can run for up to 100 days without maintenance.

This is definitely one of the most powerful vacuum cleaners that I've ever tested at this price point. With 19,000 Pascal of suction power, this is able to pick up pretty much anything that I threw at it. With that strong suction power, this was able to clean up messes on both hard surfaces and my carpeted areas. On hard surfaces, this had no issues picking up larger debris like cereal.

It mapped my entire main floor in minutes. Not only that, it automatically detected each room, segmented them intelligently, and made it remarkably simple to rename and customize everything. No guessing, no fiddling with borders, no frustration. It just worked.

In my testing, the L40S crushed it, picking up every mess I threw at it. From cereal to hair, it handled it effortlessly. On both hardwood floors and carpet, it easily matched the X40 in suction. Even though the L40 is technically rated a bit lower, it also got this wild little trick, an auto extending side brush that reaches deep into corners.

Our winner is the Dreame L40S AE . And it’s extremely important to look for the “AE” at the end, because Dreame has two other L40S models . In our head-to-head comparison, the AE version was significantly better, especially in obstacle avoidance .

The Dreamehome app takes that same attention to detail into carpet care, letting the L40s Pro Ultra automatically lift its mop on rugs, vacuum twice on thicker pile, or avoid delicate mats entirely depending on what its sensors detect underfoot.

I love that they both can extend their side brush into the corner for corner cleaning capabilities. And they can both move their mop pad right up against the wall. This feature here moves the mop pad and it mops right next to the wall. That's an awesome feature. I love both of those features. Now, another difference is a dirt detection sensor. So, the L40 has what's called a dirt detection sensor.

So, I like it's doing a good job of avoiding that cable. I like how it goes back and forth in nice straight lines because of the LAR navigation. So it is recognizing that toy also which can be very hard to recognize because it's not very tall. So it it has to re rely on the front sensor. The LAR is not hitting that toy. The front sensor is. So the sensor is working very good.

So, I've been using the Dreamy L40S Ultra for a few weeks now, and it's been doing a great job at keeping my house clean. I've been having it run every day on schedule, and it's keeping the pet hair, the dust, debris all at bay. And big thanks to Dreamy for sending this unit over for review. Now, starting with the unboxing, it does feel like a premium experience.

The Dreamy L40S Ultra has the strongest suction power of any vacuum I've ever tested at 19,000 Pascals. In my experience, this means it has no problems picking up any kind of dirt I throw at it. But it's quiet for this strong of suction. Not something that would wake up my children upstairs.

It works very well and according to Dreamy, it can pick up hair nearly a foot long without tangling. The L40S Ultra features Dreamy's extending mop pad and side brush. The dual flex arm side brush on the L40S works well, very gently popping out to clean into corners and along edges. Along with this, one of the mop pads can extend outward to clean right up to any edges it can reach.

The biggest improvement with the Dream L40S is cleaning performance, especially if you've got carpets. The extra suction power is noticeable. On hard floors, the difference is fairly small because the L10s is already pretty good. But on carpets and rugs, the L40 pulls more dirt, particularly fine dust and pet hair. Obstacle avoidance is also improved.

Bottom Line: Choose the Dreame L40s Ultra if you want strong vacuuming and a mostly hands‑off mop dock; Skip it if your home has lots of small clutter or you need flawless carpet‑mop behavior, since those can be inconsistent.

However, not all objects are recognized correctly. Very small objects, such as bottle caps, were simply vacuumed up. Charging cables, shoes, or brooms are reliably maneuvered out of the way. In addition, all objects are marked on the map and the Dreamy takes a photo of all obstacles. That's a really cool feature.

The biggest downgrade is with the object avoidance system. Dreamy removed the RGB camera and LED lights, leaving just a single structured light sensor. For context, structured light works by projecting a light pattern and using a low res camera to interpret distortions in that pattern to detect obstacles.

Users note that the dock's large water tanks mean the dirty water needs to be emptied daily, and the mop's post cleaning wash and dry cycle takes a few hours.
