The Alienware 16 Area 51 may just be the most unique gaming laptop I’ve reviewed this year. Its sci-fi-inspired styling immediately makes it stand out from the pack, but its great gaming performance and surprisingly heavy weight – nearly 10lbs with the power adapter included – make this more of a desktop replacement than a typical 16-inch gaming laptop.

Overall build quality feels great. This is one of the most premium-feeling laptops I've tested so far this year. There's not much flex when pushing down hard on the keyboard, and the lid feels sturdier than most others, too, resulting in no screen wobble when typing. The lid hinges feel sturdy, even if I open and close the lid way too fast.

The new OLED screen is fast and beautiful, and wisely kept at the same 2K(ish) resolution of the IPS panel for similar performance across the range. Those on a budget might want to look at the new Alienware 15 , but those gamers who are fed up with the skinnification of gaming laptops will feel right at home with the Alienware 16 Area-51.

All right, this is shaping up to be my favorite uh 16-inch gaming laptop so far for 2025. We are talking about the Alienware 16 Area 51 gaming laptop and I want to thank Alienware for sending it over. Obviously, you can see this uh beautiful design here in this liquid teal color. It is absolutely gorgeous. You can see that from the backside there. uh really really nice.

I love the OLED displays, though not just for the usual reasons. Yes, it has outstanding contrast, vivid color, and superb motion clarity—all of which is typical for OLED. What I really like, though, is the semi-gloss finish. This is uncommon for an OLED display on a laptop, and it makes the display a lot easier to view in a bright room.

I actually like the design quite a bit. Uh the Alienware Area 51 laptop here uh is not the cheapest thing out there, but of course Alienware are more for enthusiasts I think and they people are willing to pay the price because of what they're getting in terms of gaming and stuff like that. The little things actually make it uh really good. And the videos do very well on my channel.

It even supports strong battery life, surviving 7 hours and 22 minutes on our battery test. That's unprecedented for a gaming laptop with a max-tier GPU. It even survived 2 hours and 28 minutes on the PCMark 10 gaming test. Again, this may not be the longest battery life, but it's hella impressive and adds to its portability quality.

In years past, I love the build quality. The design, but they had lower maximum graphics powers on the models I reviewed, and therefore some similarly priced models outperformed this one, even though I would personally choose it based on the build quality. Okay, I will get that out of the packaging in just a moment. For now, let's check out the charger block. It is a 360 watt charger block.

This laptop has fantastic build quality, upgrade opportunity with three M.2 slots, Thunderbolt 5, incredible performance, and it's well priced for the build quality of this laptop. Aluminum top cover, bottom cover, and a nice plastic keyboard deck. And it's one of the heavier laptops, which makes it very sturdy.

And let me say right off the bat, if you're looking for a laptop that build quality is your focus and then performance is a very close second, the Alienware is where I would lean you towards. However, if you're looking for a laptop with great performance and at a slightly better price point, but still you don't want to compromise on a great color accurate display and good build quality, then check

I'm really liking the styling that Alienware have used this year. Now we have the liquid teal outer shell. And flipping it over, we can see the cryo chamber with the Gorilla Glass. But I'm going to warn you now straight away. You probably see this. You're going to need your cleaning cloth because this thing is a fingerprint magnet.

The build quality of the Alienware is excellent with a sturdy feel and minimal flex in the chassis and keyboard tray. Alienware has even included a transparent Gorilla Glass panel on the bottom, allowing a peek at the internals while also serving a functional purpose for air flow. The laptop's anodized finish feels premium, though it is prone to fingerprints.

The Alienware is a heavy thick machine but its build quality is excellent with minimal flex and the bottom panel is surprisingly easy to remove for component access. It feels like a premium statement piece designed to stand out. Conversely, the Acer Predator Helios Neo 16S AI opts for a more restrained and professional look.

The Alienware 16 Area‑51 is a gloriously unsubtle powerhouse, delivering blistering performance, a superb display and enough RGB to light a small village. It’s heavy, loud under pressure and occasionally temperamental, but when it’s firing on all cylinders, it’s an absolute riot to use for both gaming and creative work.

Battery life is where the Area-51 doesn’t impress. Even with Nvidia Optimus switching to integrated graphics when on the desktop and a sizeable 96Whr cell, I was only seeing about four hours of typical desktop use at a push. Looping a video at 50% brightness got me closer to six.

There is a reason this product gets mixed reviews. Some of you may think this Alienware laptop is the ultimate gaming beast, but for others, it might just be too much. And honestly, that's a fair assessment. This laptop, much like a fine-tuned racing car, can be a handful for the average gamer or office user. It's not for the faint of heart. Frequently asked questions

It ranks #3 of 16 on our gaming laptops tier list, in B tier. That placement draws on 40 cited sources across 32 outlets.

1 of the 40 sources with a clear view is critical of it: Just Josh. Dell's notorious bloatware. Proprietary parts complicate out-of-warranty repair. Thick and heavy.

Someone who wants a big, cool-running desktop replacement and is happy to stay inside Dell's ecosystem for service. It sits in B tier on our gaming laptops board: the thick chassis has big cooling and big heatsinks, and conservative sustained power favours longevity. What holds it back is Dell's bloatware and proprietary parts that complicate repair once the warranty ends. If you want the same class of machine without those strings, the Lenovo Legion Pro 7i Gen 10 is the top pick, and the HP Omen Max 16 offers user-replaceable RAM and SSD with a broad warranty network.

The hardware should last. It is built thick with big heatsinks and runs conservative sustained power, which keeps the components cool and is the best predictor of a long life. The risk is not the hardware failing early but what happens when something does fail after the warranty, because proprietary Dell parts make out-of-warranty repair harder and costlier than on a machine built from standard parts. Buy the longest warranty you can justify.

Not easily. Our research flagged proprietary parts as the main con, which means replacements come through Dell rather than off the shelf, and out-of-warranty repair is complicated as a result. If self-service matters to you, the HP Omen Max 16 on our board has user-replaceable RAM and SSD and is the better fit for a five-year ownership window.

Mostly, yes. Dell's preinstalled software is the other con our research recorded, and the usual fix is to uninstall what you do not use and keep only the Alienware control software that manages fans, lighting and power profiles. A clean Windows reinstall with only the Dell drivers is the thorough version. None of that changes the hardware, which is the part that earns its B tier.

It is thick and heavy, and that is by design. The weight buys the big cooling that lets it run cool under sustained load, so it belongs on a desk rather than in a bag. It is still far more livable than its 18-inch sibling, the Alienware 18 Area-51, which our board ranks in D tier as an overweight, overpriced desktop replacement whose power appetite keeps its cooling under constant stress.
