Steam Frame, a standalone VR headset , captured my excitement the most. It’s been six years since the Valve Index debuted in 2019, and rumors have been heating up recently. But Valve’s return to VR in 2026, amid a landscape full of AI and AR-infused mixed reality headsets and glasses , is quite different. Valve isn’t interested in AR right now, or AI for that matter.

This week we got three inside 36 hours, and stacked together they say something I want to say out loud before the reservation page appears: the Steam Frame is launching into the worst hardware market I have ever seen, and I think it wins anyway. Not just survives. Wins, in a way that pulls the rest of VR hardware up with it.

In two words or less, this thing is impossibly good and maybe more importantly, impossibly versatile. They managed to make it lighter, more comfortable, and higher fidelity than the OG Index for PC VR gaming.

VoodooDE VR does claim that it is the most comfortable VR headset he has ever tried, despite being bigger than the Meta Quest 3. He also has the two controllers, as well as the dongle that enables PC VR gaming. Another tidbit he shared was that the Steam Frame worked without any problems with both VR and non-VR games.

But most exciting to me is the finally the reveal of Valve's new VR headset. This is the Steam Frame. Now, if you recall, the Valve Index was announced almost 6 years ago now, and I first checked that out. And since then, we' all been curious about what if Valve was going to continue making a VR headset, if they were still into VR. And now, we have some answers.

As an avid user of VR, I was extremely excited when it was revealed that Valve is creating their own standalone headset. Yes, this is not just the Index. This is not the Vive. The new Steam Frame is here to introduce PC gamers to the world of standalone VR, much like the MetaQuest series. And I'm excited about this.

The Steam Frame is insanely balanced, but one thing I might not have said in the video is that I actually held a Quest 3 and the Steam Frame upright and the Steam Frame instantly just stayed balanced and the Quest 3 fell forward because it's so front heavy. You don't know what you're missing until you've tried it. And ever since I tried the Steam Frame, all I keep thinking about is comfort.

And for me, I'm personally really happy about this announcement. At this point in time, nearly all standalone games are made for Meta Quest, and most perform pretty well. But, I would argue 72 Hz is the baseline, and as we all know, some games' frame rates dip and drop all over the place. But, with Steam Frame having the more powerful Snapdragon chip and 16 gig of RAM versus Quest's 8 gig of RAM,

Something really awesome mentioned here is that you can actually have it so your frame will automatically connect to your PC just by turning on Steam VR on the host PC, which I assume means you'll be able to jump into VR just as easily as you can with an Index. No connect to PC button necessary after initial setup, open Steam VR, throw on your headset, and play.

The fact that the Steam frame will operate as a tiny Steam OS PC gives you a huge amount of flexibility. The pivot arms are actually so important. It's what we were lacking on, say, the Galaxy XR where this is just locked in and it's extremely uncomfortable. You don't realize how much that give is needed. It was the same way on the Play for Dream and in most Quest headsets. You have several different hinges. You have a hinge here, a hinge there, and it just makes comfort just that much easier.

Steam Frame's power needs more time to examine . On paper, its Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset is a significant jump from Quest 2, but Valve didn't offer a native Half-Life: Alyx build to test on Frame; we had to stream it from a PC. That makes us wonder about its overall VR-rendering headroom for people who want to play fare like Alyx without a gaming PC available.

There is no Half-Life: Alyx moment on the calendar. Road to VR reported at the announcement that a Steam Frame team member flatly denied Valve has any VR content in development, and seven months of silence have not contradicted that. Valve's bet is that the library is the launch title: your entire Steam catalog over the dongle, plus standalone Proton play.

Sad to see they didn't go with OLED, but realistically the Index's displays still hold up to this day. And its biggest downside is the lenses. And speaking of that, they're now going to be using custom pancake lenses for that thin edgetoedge sharpness. And from the pictures, they also seem to be pretty large.
