The tenkeyless Keychron C3 Pro is the top budget pick in our mechanical keyboard guide, and it remains a great stand-in for the G.Skill KM250 RGB if you want to stay under $50. With its gasket mount design, internal foam and pre-lubed switches, it feels and sounds fuller to press. The base version we tested lacks hot-swappable switches and only has a red backlight, but Keychron has released a revised model that addresses that and add full RGB. That said, its ABS keycaps still feel cheaper and can develop a shine over time, plus there's no volume knob. Some may find KM250's smaller size more convenient for gaming, too.

When it comes to performance however, the C3 Pro stacks up with some of the best, especially with the linear red switches, which are my personal favorite. Keystrokes are smooth, responsive, and consistent, just like the classic Cherry MX reds with a 2mm actuation point, 4mm travel distance, and 45g actuation force. It’s got N-key rollover, 1000Hz polling rate, and web-based QMK/VIA software that’s a lot easier to use than typical downloadable software suites from the big companies. For around 40 bucks, the C3 Pro is a layup when choosing a budget gaming keyboard.

The Keychron C3 Pro comes in at a great low price for a mechanical keyboard with foam and gasket mounting for quiet operation. It only features red backlighting and lacks a number pad, but overall, it is a highly recommendable budget keyboard.

Just a solid and reliable keyboard. Used mainly for gaming and some programming. For the price you could probably find something with more features but the price is fine for the reliability. I paid about $25 for the non-hotswap to try out the keyboard and red switches and just kept using it. At the time the hotswap was $40-45 and that was probably worth it, but I didn’t plan to mod the switches. Previously I used an older Logitech TKL with Romer G’s until some keycaps got worn down.
