The R3 Meta is a monitor with heaps of details and balance, that can also turn into a superbly fun listen, when needed. Since it has stepped into my apartment, I have been enjoying my music on a whole new level. Exploring music that I have not listened to in too long, while also giving me different ways to explore my current playlists. KEF has created an impressive monitor that’s setting the bar very high for its competition. It is a master of every genre, but it sounds especially fun with IDM, Electronica, Rock and Synth 80’s. For my personal taste, it is perfect.Read S

The KEF R3 Meta earns its reputation. This is a standmount that does the thing most standmounts promise and few actually deliver: full-range composure without a subwoofer being mandatory, imaging precision that holds up under complex material, and a midrange that makes vocals genuinely compelling rather than merely accurate. The only real tax is the 4Ω load demanding a real amplifier, and a treble tuning that rewards proper toe-out. Neither is a dealbreaker at this price.Read 소 소리샵 Sorishop_TUBE 소리샵 Sorishop_TUBE · 228K subscribers · Apr 2023
Seeing how clearly the vocals emerge here, it is clear that the R3 Meta is fundamentally a speaker that sings and plays in a bright, cheerful, and lighthearted manner. It was a speaker with a fresh and lively sound texture, much like a spring day these daysWatch N
I just purchased a pair of R3 Metas and I will just say WOW! My daily drivers are Magnepan 3.7i's and while they are amazing speakers there is something special about the R3's. Images as you say. I wanted to buy a pair of bookies for the imaging and sound staging they provide. I was torn between the S400's and R3's. I am confidant I made the right choice although I have not heard the Buchardts.Watch C
The result is a stand-mount speaker that really stands out. KEF lovers will especially love them, as they mark a new step forward in the evolution of the R-series. Those new to the brand can appreciate the sheer detail on offer, plus some nice bass for a speaker its size.Watch Z
I’ve had these for a month now and I have to say I’ve had quite the opposite experience. After break in, bass really opened up. I also compared them to the LS50 wireless but the R3 was in my opinion a class above. I haven’t compared to the R300’s. I do have the same bent front grill though, but I’m been promised to get a replacement. A lot of money but well worth it in my opinion. I love them.Watch J

I truly love these speakers which work in my room and connected to a Peachtree Nova 65. Thank you for you honest and and expertises evaluation. First of all, the R3 Meta is an allrounder speaker right off the bat. meaning from bass, mid-range to treble, there's really not much to complain about and it excels in every category. But I would say the highlight of the show for me with the R3 Meta was ironically the treble, which I quite didn't like on the original R3. The R3 Meta has a immensely immensely more refined trebleWatch N
The R3 Meta are just bloody amazing. The bass drops deeper, way deeper than my previous speakers, the imaging is insane and the soundstage is remarkable. Every album I play now has new surprises. Records I've had for years and years just offer up so many smiles and ooooh moments. It's mad! Totally bonkers. I'm head over heels in love with the R3 Meta.Watch E

I was pretty much settled on the KEF R3 Meta for my main L/R in my HT/listening room, which is currently my Great Room (27 × 17 with an 18-ft ceiling). That said, within the next ~18 months, I’ll be downsizing to a smaller home with a dedicated room around 12 × 14 with a 9-ft ceiling (kids are grown and almost off the payroll — we’re heading south).Read thread J

From I don't like KEF sound to wow, I am seriously impressed by KEF, the Meta series must be doing something right. Now, when Mr. Quart told me that he was blown away by the Meta, I actually have not really listened to the R3 Meta yet. I especially appreciate the comparison to other speakers, as well as the comparison to the regular Kef R3. But most of all I love your ear, because you have the same sensitivity to overly-boosted treble that I do, and insist on neutrality above all in the speakers you review. Thanks, Erin!Watch M

Oddly enough (or maube not?) in my current research for a pair of speakers for my first hi-fi setup I narrowed down my list of candidates exactly to the Wharfedale Heritage and some KEF, now dropping the R3 meta in favour of the Q concerto. Therefore, when listening to this speaker, the mid-range and above are positioned and imaged very clearly and distinctly. The bass does not just come out in proportion to that; rather, when the bass emits a tremendous amount of volume, it exerts tremendous power to overwhelm the listener. That is the greatest charm of the R3 MetaWatch Z
The Kef R3 Meta blew my mind. Wowzers. Like, really, Wowzers. Vocals are nuts, Dominique Fils Aime "Nameless" was absolutely mind blowing as was Karin Krog "Open Space". Just incredible detail. The workmanship and detail on these speakers is second to none. Start saving!Watch U

I have used Kef LS50's & now own & use Kef R3's, ProAc's are very good but with a pair of SVS SB1000 Pro subwoofer's the ProAcs are very good but the R3's to me are the better speakers for myself especialy with the SVS subwoofers fitted with SoundPath Isolation feet, Audioquest NRG-X2 power leads, independent (2 x12") SVS sealed box subwoofers are more musical than ported subwoofers, very fast for 12" subwoofers I like the ProAc's but the R3's for me, you need a good amp as R3 min impedence is 3.2ohms, the LS50 are far to quiet, only good as desktop or bedroom speakers, near field passive monitors, or whilst working on the PC, for my living room 87db, 3-way, 110db max Kef R3's, the ProAc's i would find a use for with my spare AE Aegis subwoofer, 9.Watch N
Ultimately, there's nothing I can complain about in R3 Meta. They came to class, turned in all their assignments, and left an apple for the teacher. The R3 is a capable mounting rack that many people will appreciate, especially if they are new to Hi-Fi. While there are competitors that can surpass them in texture and tone, and certainly in the detail that awaits you in the music, the R3 is still quite easy to recommend as an acoustic, as it is the gold standard of pretty good quality. And with that, I'll see you, Ke, who love audio files , in the next videoWatch N
This review couldn't have come out at a more perfect time. I was getting serious at pulling the trigger on these very soon, just because they are 3-way designs, they measure decently. But overall, the design of them are really good. So, let's go through this thing and talk about it a little bit. And this one is the again the Meta, which has the little special back chamber on the tweeter. Um, I'm not a big fan of exactly how these sound.Watch K r/KEF u/RhombusMike · owner
I have not heard the R3 Metas, but watched many a review trying to determine if it is worth selling the R3s for Metas. I determined the difference to be too small for me to seriously consider this. If I was buying new and the difference is only 200-300, I might grab the Metas. Any more than that I'd just get the OG R3 and enjoy them. We know that the Meta tech is only applied to the UniQ tweeter.Read thread A
The pros and cons of the KEF R3 Metas are:Watch A
It's possible that there are variants in production, but it seems that despite the box being for the "R3 Meta" the actual speakers enclosed are the original R3 prior to the metamaterial tweeter construction. The HF coaxial driver on the original R3 has only the Uni-Q label at the bottom, but the R3 Meta has this label at the top of the HF driver with "Metamaterial" labeling at the bottom of it.Watch T

I listened to both the LS50 meta and R3 meta, and ended buying the LS50 meta. The imaging on the LS50 meta is much superior to the R3 meta. To me, that's the most important thing in a speaker. The woofer/bass driver on the R3 meta is late in the timing compared to the tweeter, and that destroys the imaging. I paired the LS50 meta with the NAD c399 and the two are just amazing together.Watch A
The R3’s bass sounds a bit different, slightly warmer and thicker compared to higher up the frequencies where things are more neutral. The 226be is more transparent in the bass region, more extended and is smootherl. I know materials shouldn’t matter but I can’t help wondering if it’s because the Kef bass driver is an aluminum and paper hybrid while the midrange is just aluminum. The Kef bass overall actually sounds a little more textured and detailed than the Revels, but with less low end extension and not as refined sounding.Watch L
The difference seams very small to me. Guess the huge price difference isnt worth it. Came from Magnat Signature 9 series. The difference is hearable but also not big. The Magnat system made a good job. So this will be the same with R3 meta to Reference 1. When you already have good speakers, more expensive speakers will only increase the sound a little bit but not in big dimensions.Watch K r/KEF u/bbuff101 · owner
For years I’ve had KEF R series speakers. The cabinets are good and strong… it’s just the woofers you need to be careful of. There is a reason they’re so fragile… the lighter the cone the quicker it can react. It sounds better. I was coiling up a cable, the RJ45 tip hit bass driver on one of the R3’s. Devastated I was to see the dink. Got the driver swapped and was back to new again.Read thread A r/audiophile u/Own-Telephone-381 · owner
I have heard the R3 and Reference 1 in 3 different rooms and no the R3 does not sound as good as the Reference 1. it is not just the bass and higher SPL capability of the reference 1, it also sounds more transparent and coherent (I attribute this to the smoother FR). Overall I prefer the R3 Meta, however the LS50 Meta can do some magic that the R3s can't. LS50 Metas are better for a desk top system or small room. LS50 Metas need a ton of power if you want to play them in a big room at dynamic volumes because they have about 2 dB dip in the vocal range, 85dB efficient and dip to 3.5 ohms.Watch H
Sonically, the R3 Meta is the most technically accomplished standmount at anywhere close to this price. The Uni-Q array produces an astonishingly holographic, three-dimensional soundstage width, depth, and height all genuinely extended with a sweet spot that's wider and more forgiving than most competing designs.Read S
It is interesting that other people are also experiencing a downgrade in sound from going from LS50 meta to R3 meta. I sold my LS50 meta and bought the R3 meta, I feel I made a mistake. My amp is a Marantz 40n in a medium size room, and I can not make the R3 sound as good as the LS50.Watch A

It ranks #3 of 31 on our bookshelf speakers tier list, in A tier. That placement draws on 85 cited sources across 55 outlets.
On our bookshelf speakers board, KEF LS50 Meta ranks #2 (A tier) ahead of KEF R3 Meta at #3 (A tier). KEF LS50 Meta: A decade-proven, over-engineered platform with zero software dependence. Its long reign as the category benchmark is itself longevity evidence.
On our bookshelf speakers board, KEF R3 Meta ranks #3 (A tier) ahead of Bowers & Wilkins 607 S3 at #19 (C tier). Bowers & Wilkins 607 S3: What Hi-Fi? calls it the best all-round B&W speaker and an award-winning standmount. That is a rare clean sweep from a specialist.
Anyone who wants a compact passive speaker with big-speaker dynamics and excellent imaging. It ranks third on our board and sits in A tier, and it gives more low-end and dynamic range than the KEF LS50 Meta one place above it. It is the board's best pick for a small room that still wants scale. If you do not own an amplifier and want one box to plug into, the Genelec 8030C is the top pick.
Many years. Our research singles out the Meta driver's consistent performance over many years, and its low distortion holds up well over time. As a passive design it has no amplifier or software inside to fail or lose support. It is a keep-for-a-decade speaker.
Yes, it is the board's best small-room pick. Our research notes its compact size comes without sacrificing quality, and its excellent imaging and dynamic range work at close range. Give it a stand with a little space behind, because a speaker with this much bass will thicken if shoved against a wall.
Yes. The KEF R3 Meta is a passive speaker and needs a stereo or integrated amplifier with speaker outputs. It has no built-in amplification, Bluetooth or streaming. Budget for the amplifier as part of the purchase.
In measured performance, yes. Our research on the Bowers & Wilkins 805 D4 found that the KEF R3 Meta matches or beats it in measured performance at a fraction of the price, which is why the 805 D4 sits in D tier and the R3 Meta in A tier. The 805 D4 is more beautifully made and pleasant to own, but the sound is not where the extra money goes.
