If you’re all-in on Google’s services but haven’t yet picked up a smart speaker, the Home Speaker makes a lot of sense. It slots seamlessly into the Google Home ecosystem, with an intelligent voice assistant that understands context and sounds more natural than either Siri or Alexa. I think this is a good thing because it actually adds a degree of flexibility that wasn't there with the original product. Though, it is a little bit thinner, so you don't want to keep anything sharp near it, obviously.

You can coax a bit more bass response out of the Google Home Speaker, and while certainly better than anything you'll get out of a laptop (as a point of reference), it's not going to hit hard enough to rattle your walls (or annoy your neighbors).

I do want to point out though that the USB-C plug is hardwired into this new speaker, which, frankly, I don't like. Cables break. Cables fray. I've actually had a Google Home power cable on my first-gen speaker fray, an easy replacement since it wasn't hardwired. Kind of a weird choice here, in my opinion. With that said, the design of the new Google Home looks slick.

The Google Home Speaker is a smarter assistant and a worse speaker than the older Nest Audio. Unless you specifically want Gemini sitting on your counter, there's no reason to pick this over a cheaper Bluetooth speaker that actually sounds good.
