The DJI Osmo 360 feels very solid in hand. They’ve chosen to steer away from the thin, rectangular form factor of the Insta360 X5, but I don’t think it’s a problem, as it’s still fairly lightweight at 183 grams. Importantly, I had no problem holding it up on the end of a 2.5-metre-long pole.Read I

The DJI Osmo 360 arrived with arguably the strongest specification sheet ever seen on a consumer 360 camera. Nearly a year later, its combination of 8K at up to 50fps, 10-bit colour, D-Log M, large sensors and 105GB of usable internal storage is still extremely impressive. However, a year of actually using a camera reveals things that a specification table cannot.Read F

Overall, I think both cameras have their respective advantages in their form factors and are easy to handle. The Osmo 360 comes with 105 GB of usable internal storage which can be expanded with a SD card. This is always very convenient in case you forget to bring a SD card. 3 of the 75 sources with a clear view are critical of it: Facebook and Squashy Boy. First-generation product, so it carries some platform risk.
On our action cameras board, Insta360 X5 ranks #4 (A tier) ahead of DJI Osmo 360 at #5 (B tier). Insta360 X5: High-resolution sensors but firmware lag compared to GoPro.
On our action cameras board, DJI Osmo 360 ranks #5 (B tier) ahead of GoPro Max 2 at #9 (D tier). GoPro Max 2: Superior 360 performance, but slightly heavier than competitors.
Buyers who want a 360 camera and are already in the DJI ecosystem, or who value DJI's firmware track record over the most mature 360 platform. It is ranked fifth on our action cameras board, in B tier, on high-quality 360 footage, excellent stabilization, a solid build, good firmware updates and ease of use. The research calls it a bit pricey for the features and notes that a first-generation product carries platform risk. The Insta360 X5 in A tier is the safer 360 pick for most people, and the DJI Osmo Action 6 in S tier is the pick if you do not need 360.
Yes, the body is waterproof without a case to a depth that covers swimming and a shallow dip. Like every 360 camera its exposed lens domes and seams are harder to seal than a boxy action camera, so use the maker's dive case for snorkelling or diving, which also keeps the stitch correct underwater. Rinse in fresh water afterwards and dry the domes with a soft cloth.
The build is rated solid and DJI's firmware updates are rated good, which are the two things that keep a camera useful over years. The risk is that it is a first-generation product, so there is no ownership history yet and early hardware can have teething problems that the second version fixes. If that worries you, the Insta360 X5 in A tier is the more proven 360 platform.
Buy the Insta360 X5 unless you have a reason to prefer DJI. Our board ranks the Insta360 X5 one place higher, in A tier, on the best 360 image quality in the class, high-quality stitching and a large app ecosystem, while the DJI Osmo 360 in B tier is rated a bit pricey for its features and carries first-generation risk. The DJI Osmo 360's case is its solid build, easy operation and DJI's firmware record.
Fit the maker's lens guards or protective covers whenever the camera is mounted near the ground, a handlebar or anything that can flick grit at it, and put the lens cover on the moment you stop shooting. A scratched 360 lens dome cannot be polished out and is the most common way these cameras are ruined. Clean the domes with a microfibre cloth only, and store the camera in its case rather than loose in a bag.
