The new Osmo Action 6 has grown, in width and height (but not depth) by about three millimeters from its predecessor, but that's not really a change you'd notice unless you put the devices next to each other. The first thing I saw was the lens looks bigger, there is a new sensor beneath the front touchscreen, and, on the aesthetic side, there is a rather stark lack of coloring.Read C Camerajabber Camera Jabber Team · reviewer · Nov 2025

Externally it’s much the same as the Osmo Action 5 Pro, which was externally much the same as the Osmo Action 4 – but inside, there are some intriguing upgrades, including a few action camera firsts. I took it for a spin on a trip to New York to find out how it performs.Read M

However, with the Osmo Action 6, they've implemented some really interesting new changes, some really important ones. Upgrades that are going to change how you use your camera. One of the biggest changes is they've introduced a new square 1 over 1.1 in sensor. It's not a full 1 in sensor, but it's pretty close. And that bigger sensor, and the square sensor adds a lot of new capabilities.Watch 2

And now with the Action 6, I think DJI has a gamecher that's perfect for the creators of today. There's the new square sensor, variable aperture, which we'll talk about more in a bit, but first let's talk about the look and feel. Now, physically, it should be very familiar to Action 5 Pro users, but it is a tiny bit bigger.Watch J

Okay, so the first thing is the most obvious because it's to do with one of the biggest features of the Osmo Action 6 and the one that I said in my previous video that if I didn't have the Osmo Action 6, it's the one that I would the feature that I would buy the camera for. It has a new 1/1.1 inch square sensor, variable aperture from F2.0 to F4.0, ultra HD 8K video, 50 GB of built-in storage, direct DJI mic connection, and waterproofing up to 20 m. During the day, the 4K footage is excellent. Got my walks around town, in the park, behind-the-scenes clips, and just everyday shooting. One of my favorite places to take this was the tennis court. I feel like the 6 is a very small iteration that is probably worth it jumping from the 3, maybe worth it from the 4, definitely not worth it from the 5P. But, packs in good features like a square sensor and aperture ring that will be well perfected by the time 4-5 users need to upgrade for whatever reason. On the other hand, the aperture ring is a mechanical point of failure which I don’t love witRead thread Y
It's not the best shallow depth of field that you've ever seen, but the fact that you can get shallow depth of the field shots in an action camera this small is actually very impressive. Beyond that, the Osmo Action 6 has a brand new sensor.Watch D r/djiosmo u/Then-Win6506 · owner
I really like the camera, and I think it is nearly perfect for me. But, what I am hesitating about is these 2 things: 1: You have to get a macro lens for good photography. (without the macro lens is fine, but for atleast some bokeh and a closer focus you have to get the macro lens) 2: It has been a pretty long time since the release.Read thread C

It ranks #1 of 16 on our action cameras tier list, in S tier. That placement draws on 47 cited sources across 43 outlets.
2 of the 47 sources with a clear view are critical of it: Kris LK and Tim Rodie Rides Motorbikes. Variable aperture is a new mechanical component whose long-term reliability under vibration is unproven.
On our action cameras board, DJI Osmo Action 6 ranks #1 (S tier) ahead of DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro at #2 (S tier). DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro: Good mid-tier option. Slightly lower image quality and battery compared to the Action 6.
On our action cameras board, DJI Osmo Action 6 ranks #1 (S tier) ahead of Insta360 Ace Pro 2 at #6 (B tier). Insta360 Ace Pro 2: Vlogging-focused features and great image quality. Software ecosystem is mature.
Most people buying an action camera. It is ranked first on our action cameras board, in S tier, on long battery life, a durable build, good stabilization and strong firmware support, and the research calls its overall performance solid across the board. Buy something else only for a specific job: the Insta360 X5 in A tier if you want 360-degree footage, the GoPro Hero13 Black in S tier if you want the benchmark for flat video quality and the widest mount ecosystem, or the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 in B tier if you vlog and want a flip-up screen.
Longer than most rivals on a charge, with long battery life its first listed strength and the verdict naming battery life as excellent. Over years of ownership the durable construction and DJI's strong firmware support are in its favour. The one open question is the variable aperture, a new mechanical part whose long-term reliability under vibration the research calls unproven.
The only con in the research is the variable aperture. It is a new moving mechanism in a camera that spends its life bolted to handlebars and helmets, and nobody yet has years of vibration data on it. Nothing else is flagged: the build is rated durable twice over and firmware support remains strong. If that risk bothers you, the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro in S tier uses a proven, debugged platform with two years of firmware maturity.
Buy the DJI Osmo Action 6 if you want the best image quality and battery life, as the research rates the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro slightly lower on both. Buy the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro if you want to spend less or prefer hardware with two years of firmware maturity behind it, because the generational gains are real but incremental. Both sit in S tier on our board, so neither is a mistake.
Yes, like every current full-size action camera it is waterproof without a case to a depth that covers swimming, surfing and rain. For deeper diving use the maker's dive housing, which protects the seals from pressure. Rinse it in fresh water after salt or chlorine and make sure the battery door is dry and locked before you take it in.
Charge it over USB-C from any USB charger or power bank, or charge the removable battery outside the camera in a multi-battery charging case, which is the faster way to keep several batteries topped up for a full day. Do not charge it while the body or the port is wet. Spare batteries are the practical answer to a long shoot, because this camera already has the longest battery life on our board and a power bank on a mount is clumsy.
