Overall, I'm pretty happy with what the camera can do. So far, I'm going to be driving to the store and then see what happens. Okay, so I was able to get them in store. Now, there's a whole problem with Amazon because I cannot cancel my order for the Action 5 Pro camera. I'm going to drive home now and I'm going to be unpacking it. Just remove the plastic. Wow.Watch

The current ones produce way better colors (and more detail) in daylight(!) Of course when shooting at night, DJI wins hands down, but it’s not as easy as saying GoPro sucks, DJI better. The reliability of GoPros has massively improved over the last few models too.Read thread T
So I stand by what I say about it not looking great when you're shooting when it's really bright and there's loads of sun because it does just have this overly processed HDR look to it.Watch

It ranks #2 of 16 on our action cameras tier list, in S tier. That placement draws on 17 cited sources across 16 outlets.
1 of the 17 sources with a clear view is critical of it: Rob | Tech Wanderer. Previous-generation hardware; generational gains over it are real, if incremental.
On our action cameras board, DJI Osmo Action 6 ranks #1 (S tier) ahead of DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro at #2 (S tier). DJI Osmo Action 6: Rugged design with excellent battery life. Firmware support remains strong.
On our action cameras board, DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro ranks #2 (S tier) ahead of Insta360 Ace Pro 2 at #6 (B tier). Insta360 Ace Pro 2: Vlogging-focused features and great image quality. Software ecosystem is mature.
Buyers who want a flagship-class action camera without paying for the newest one. It is ranked second on our action cameras board, in S tier, on solid image quality, decent battery life, a rugged build and a proven platform with two years of firmware maturity on the same sensor pipeline. If you want the best image quality and battery life DJI makes, the DJI Osmo Action 6 in S tier is slightly better on both. If you want to spend even less, the DJI Osmo Action 4 in B tier shares its sensor class.
Yes. It is previous-generation hardware, and the research says the DJI Osmo Action 6's gains over it are real, but it calls them incremental, and the older camera keeps S tier on our board. Its mid-tier price and a debugged firmware platform are the reasons to choose it over the newer model. The case against it is only that it is slightly behind on image quality and battery.
Battery life is rated decent, a step below the DJI Osmo Action 6 but comfortable for a day of clips with one spare. Over the long run its rugged build and a platform the research calls proven and debugged, with two years of firmware maturity, are the strongest reliability signals on our board short of the top pick. No failure pattern is recorded against it.
Yes, it is waterproof without a case to a depth that covers swimming, snorkelling and surf, like every current full-size action camera. Deeper dives need the maker's dive housing so the seals are not stressed by pressure. Check the battery door is locked and dry before entering the water, and rinse the camera in fresh water afterwards.
Plug a USB-C cable into the port behind the sealed door and use any USB charger or power bank, or drop the removable battery into a multi-battery charging case to charge spares separately. Make sure the port and body are dry first, and close the door firmly afterwards or the camera is no longer sealed. A charging case with spare batteries is the practical setup for a long day.
Buy the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro unless the price gap is large. Both share the same 1/1.3-inch sensor class and the same durable DJI build, but the DJI Osmo Action 4 sits in B tier as a last-generation model with older firmware and fewer features, while the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro holds S tier. The DJI Osmo Action 4 is routinely discounted well below its list price, and at a deep discount it is the better budget buy on our board.
