Canon EOS R7
The strongest APS-C body Canon sells, with enthusiast build and IBIS, and Digital Camera World's overall pick. It ranks below the Nikon APS-C and full-frame picks because the R7's early shutter-mechanism failure reports, which Canon had to repair under warranty, are exactly the kind of reliability blemish this lens weighs heavily.

Even so, I feel that many of these actually play to the EOS R7's strengths. Its high-speed burst shooting and sophisticated autofocus make it really well suited to wildlife and sports photography, and the crop factor of the smaller sensor means that Canon's full-frame telephotos gain a further 1.6x effective focal length, or reach. It's already one of the best Canon cameras for sports and wildlife, and we expect it to become popular for a wider range of subjects as more RF-S lenses are added to the line-up.Read C Christopher Frost Christopher Frost · 377K subscribers · Sept 2022
And I like the R7 because it immediately became a perfect and competitive premium crop sensor camera.Watch P
The EOS R7 is Canon's best APS-C sensor camera for photo enthusiasts interested in capturing the most demanding subjects and scenarios—such as skittish wildlife, competitive sports, and weddings. A sturdy magnesium construction, 15fps tracking focus with smart subject recognition, and 5-axis sensor stabilization are all points in its favor. Additionally, a dense 32.5MP sensor leaves room to crop, while 4K60 video capture should please vloggers.Read J Josh Sattin Josh Sattin · 54K subscribers · Sept 2022
You have a wide focal range to shoot with and can start using your R7 right away. This is a fantastic camera.Watch D
When I want to shoot video, I'm getting glorious 4K (which has been oversampled from 7K) with dedicated headphone and microphone jacks. There's twin card slots, so you don't have to worry about corrupted data, and the in-body image stabilization is good for up to 8 stops. If anyone scoffs at an APS-C camera being top of this list, they've clearly never used this camera. With a thoughtful approach to your Canon EOS R7 setup, you can walk out the door on day one and start capturing images you’re truly proud of.Read K KrisLuckPhoto KrisLuckPhoto · 10.5K subscribers · Jul 2024
This is the Canon R7 in 2024, and here's what this camera is capable of. All right, so all the footage you saw was shot with this little camera here, the Canon R7. It's a crop sensor with a 1.6 crop sensor factor on the Canon. It is a truly, truly amazing camera for wildlife.Watch C
A year and thousands of frames in, the Canon R7 is still an easy recommendation. The 32.5MP APS-C sensor, 651-point animal-detection autofocus, in-body stabilization, dual SD slots, and 500-plus-shot battery add up to a camera that keeps up with wildlife, landscapes, and action for far less than full-frame. A few mirrorless adjustments aside, nothing here has made me want to go back.Read J Jeff Gresham Jeff Gresham · 4.5K subscribers · Sept 2025
For me, the OG R7 still has plenty of life left. Autofocus is fast and sticky. quality is killer and it keeps me sharp as a photographer. I'll happily ride the original R seven into 2026 and beyond.Watch T
✅ You want a small all-rounder: Its APS-C sensor gives the EOS R7 travel-friendly dimensions, while its kit lens covers a useful 18-150mm focal range. ✅ You want a budget sports camera: The EOS R7 makes excellent subject-tracking autofocus available to those without top-end full-frame budgets.Read C

The R7 does well at tracking wildlife action photography, for example, Figure 1b. The R7 has delivered on all fronts except one: very low light astrophotography.Read J Jan Wegener Jan Wegener · 127K subscribers · Sept 2023

After all this criticism, you might think I hate the Canon EOS R7. I don't. In fact, I can wholeheartedly recommend it, but only to a very specific person. This camera isn't for the generalist or the photographer who wants one camera to do everything perfectly.Watch B Byrder Byrder · 10 subscribers · Jul 2026
But, with a sharp lens and using electronic first curtain, the R7 is very capable of sharp shots with tons of detail. If you're willing to put up with a lower keeper rate and some frustrating misses, the R7 is an exceptional bird photography camera for the price. That being said, if you have the budget, the original R5 is probably the best overall value in 2026. And with the rumored release of the R7 Mark II in 2027, you may just want to wait for that. In the meantime, I'll keep using my R7, but I can't recommend it over the original R5 at this point in time for bird photography.Watch
