According to my tests, it does it better than any other brewer on the market. It was the majority favorite in our taste tests and delivered the most consistent brew water temperature, always falling within the 195 – 205 °F range specified by the SCA. Despite those two very big pluses, there are a few things that land the Moccamaster down here instead of up with our top picks. One is its look. Compared to the Ratio machine, which is just as simple but also offers extras like bloom time in the brewing process and a thermal carafe, the Technivorm takes up more counter space and doesn’t look nearly as sleek. But if you're into the Technivorm's diner coffee maker aesthetic (and I totally respect if that’s your thing) it is a high-quality, long-lasting coffee maker (the test kitchen has had the same one for more than four years).

That nets you a repeatable brew but it also ends up a little flatter and more muted than a pourover like a V60. I have and really like my Moccamaster. I keep a locally roasted blended medium roast bean on hand for the Moccamaster. I also buy specialty beans I only run through the V60. They are good in the Moccamaster but don’t live up to the potential I can get with the V60.

We loved the unique aesthetic, but were disappointed that we didn’t get more coffee customizability or automation. If you don't mind simplicity but would like to pay less, look to the OXO at the top of this list. It's not a design centrepiece like the Moccamaster, but it does a very good job for a better price.

While the body of the Moccamaster is metal, the reservoir lid, brew basket, and basket lid are all plastic and the tactile experience of assembling them each brew tends to conflict with the otherwise premium nature of the coffee maker.

Technivorm's Moccamaster may have a cult following, but users also seem to have their fair share of problems. In our last episode of The Coffee Lab, we did some troubleshooting around temperature and water distribution.

It’s easiest to justify if you value build, looks, and consistent fundamentals over convenience features—because it’s expensive and still has a few practical annoyances (like hand-wash care).
