And back then, I didn't think that it was all that bad of a camera. There's a lot of zoom power, image stabilization, RAW, a small package overall, and good looks that can be rendered by the camera's processor. It spent a lot of time in my closet tucked into a camera bag. But when I pulled it back out recently, I realized that this is exactly what so many people have been clamoring for.

It does have a nice little grip on the side, and of course, it has that tiltable LCD screen, which is convenient. So, what this camera does not come shipped with is an SD card, which you are definitely going to need to take your pictures and videos.

Panasonic Lumix ZS99. Pocket power with 30 times zoom magic. Ever felt like your phone's lens is a sly prankster? Cropping the world's wonders into pint-sized pixels while your travel dreams demand more? That twinge of regret as distant details dissolve or vibrant vistas shrink to me memories. It's the pocket paradox. Gear too greedy for grandeur. If Zoom fails, hit home.

In real-world use, that means you get strong reach without relying heavily on digital zoom, which helps keep images clearer and more detailed when shooting far subjects. The 4K video recording and 4K photo feature is another major advantage.

It's up to you if you're willing to trade away the picture quality that comes with a larger image sensor in favor of the ZS99's zoom lens. Photographers who prefer to use a compact camera over a phone and prefer higher image quality over zoom power have other options to consider, too.

But the problem with this camera is there is a heavy crop in 4K 30 video almost 1.5 times. So you really lose that 24 mm wide angle. But on the plus side, you get a much longer zoom in 4K 30 video. The camera has fiveaxis inbody image stabilization. So USBC is the new standard for charging. So that's one of the major motivations Panasonic has for replacing this camera for updating the ports.

But while the screen improved, the electronic viewfinder is gone. This is a big deal for some users. Many people prefer using the EVF, especially in bright outdoor light where screens can be hard to see. Without it, you're limited to framing shots on the screen. For some, this might feel like a step backward.

While the ZS99 boasts a lot of positives, it's important to address some potential drawbacks. The small sensor size, typical of compact cameras, might struggle in low light conditions. Also, while the 30x zoom is impressive, image quality can slightly degrade at the extreme telephoto end.
