This is a really top and premium compact camera. And this is the Sony ZV-1. Now, these cameras have the same sensor and they have a lot of similarities. They are hybrid cameras, which means they can be used for photography or video. The RX100 is much more stills-centered and the ZV-1 is much more video-centered.

That price drop makes the popular compact camera a little more palatable. The RX100 VII is the number one pick on Digital Camera World's guide to the best zoom cameras , thanks to mixing a one-inch stacked sensor with a healthy 24-200mm equivalent zoom lens.

If you've been looking for a pocket-sized camera that still hits near professional-level performance, the Sony Cyber-shot RX100 VII bundle is one of the most powerful compact cameras ever made. This is the type of camera people buy when smartphones aren't cutting it anymore, but they still want something small enough to carry everywhere.

The Sony RX100 VII remains one of the most capable premium compact cameras available in 2026. Smartphones now handle most casual photos, and mirrorless cameras dominate serious photography, but the RX100 VII still has a clear place between both.

I love how this camera works in daylight. Not so thrilled with its video capabilities. Regardless, I love it. Here are a few snapshots from my latest walk. No crops ins. Just optical. Just simple coloring in Lightroom. AI was only used ONCE in one photo where I removed an “intruding” head. Good luck friends with your RX7s.

Now, for as many strengths as this camera has, there obviously are some limitations to it. You have a small 1-in sensor, which in bright light, you know, you're getting nice daytime shots. You probably won't notice it, but in lower light, you might see more grain and stuff like that than you're used to with obviously a full-frame or even APS-C sensor.

If your main priority is value, I would compare today’s new price against a clean used RX100 VII or RX100 VI before buying. And if your shooting leans more toward video than stills, Sony’s newer compact vlog cameras may make more sense than paying a premium for the RX100 VII’s longer zoom.

| Yes, the Sony RX100 VII can be used for astrophotography, especially with its high-resolution sensor and versatile features, but it may have limitations compared to dedicated astro cameras. Using manual settings, a tripod, and long exposures can help achieve good results.

The premium makes sense only if you absolutely need pocket size with top-tier autofocus. Travel photographers wanting one compact for everything might justify the cost. Content creators who vlog a lot appreciate the features.

For this camera, it was probably the video quality that lacked. One thing you can’t argue against when it comes to this Sony RX100 VII is the fact that the photos are as good as a high-end mirrorless camera.
