The Google Pixel 8a has been my favourite mid-range phone since it was released and based on this first look, the Pixel 9a could well step neatly in to claim that crown. I miss the camera bar already, but that feels like a small issue when compared with how much potential the Pixel 9a has elsewhere.

So, overall, pretty nice. It looks like it almost has zero camera bump, but it does have a little bit of a camera bump. So, if I set it down, it does not seem to rock, though, as I push left and right on it. So, that's really nice to see. The Pixel 9a has something I've been dreaming about for years, or at least bringing back, and that's a flatback. I mean, no more awkward rocking on a desk when you tap the screen. It just lies there peacefully like a chilled out yoga master. The Pixel 9, on the other hand, may not wobble, but it does leave a gap between the phone and table. But the 9A, man, it just sits. And it looks clean, too.

The display's bezels are noticeably thicker than the more expensive Pixels, betraying the phone's mid-range nature, but otherwise it looks good. The screen is plenty sharp here. Swiping and scrolling are quite smooth, too, thanks to the 120 Hz refresh rate and is able to dial down to a minimum of 60 Hz when the screen is idling to save energy. For audio, the Pixel 9a has a pair of stereo speakers.

Well that is just YOUR 9A. I would try a factory reset because my 9A has none of these issues. I'm sorry you're experiencing all these issues, that is so not cool with a new phone.

The bezels of this phone are massive. Imagine if it got the same bezels of the 9 Pro. It would have looked so much better, but after some time, I got used to it. I recommend not to look at any other phone with thin bezels to make it easier for yourself. However, when I take the phone out of the case, it's left with some visible marks, particularly where the magnet is within the case. These marks seem to be permanently there now.
