File transfers were blazing fast, and even with large media files, the drive kept up without any noticeable slowdowns. One thing I found particularly convenient was the automatic optimization for Apple's file system, APFS, which makes the drive a seamless addition to any MacBook or iMac setup.

And I'm not going to bore you with the statistics, but yeah, it's faster. It's a lot faster. Sorry, as you can see, it's a bit beat up, but I take it everywhere. And honestly, I hope the scratches on the corners help show how durable it is. I like that it runs off of USBC and it has a little light to show that it's connected.

The one mark against it is the DRAM-less design . A dedicated DRAM cache helps with consistency and sustained random I/O; the X9 Pro does without to hit its price, relying on host memory buffer. In everyday use that’s a reasonable trade, but it’s why this scores 8.0 rather than higher, and why a heavy-write workload favors a drive with DRAM.

The pro costs a bit more cash up front. However, you pay for the metal build and the deep peace of mind. For me, that extra cost felt totally worth it in the end. But if cash is tight, the basic one still does a great job.

Now that's an immediate drawback for me. You know, it's going to be spending a lot of its time attached to my desktop computer and that's not a lot of use to me at all. Also, it doesn't come looks like it doesn't come with an adapter to you know to USB USB A is it called? The larger size that for example desktop computers tend to have above them. So that's a bit of a an annoyance.

Frequently asked questions

It ranks #3 of 28 on our external SSDs tier list, in A tier. That placement draws on 33 cited sources across 29 outlets.

3 of the 33 sources with a clear view are critical of it: Apple Community, Brutal Reviews and Gaffords Go Coastal. A step down from the X10 in speed. Limited to 10Gbps where siblings offer 20Gbps.

On our external ssds board, Crucial X9 Pro ranks #3 (A tier) ahead of Samsung T7 Shield at #6 (A tier). Samsung T7 Shield: The most proven platform in the category: years in the field with a strong failure record, IP65 ruggedization, a long warranty, and Samsung's firmware support behind it. The default answer for a drive you never want to think about again.

On our external ssds board, Samsung T9 ranks #1 (S tier) ahead of Crucial X9 Pro at #3 (A tier). Samsung T9: Ranked here on pure ownership merit, because the hardware and warranty are genuinely excellent. It is still a trap because you pay the Samsung tax for what the Crucial X10 delivers. Buy the X10 or the T7 Shield.

The Crucial X9 Pro is for most real-world owners: people who want a rugged, well-warranted drive and whose computer has 10Gbps USB ports. Wired called it the sweet spot of speed, portability and price, and the research agrees. It has the same 5-year warranty and IP55 body as the Crucial X10 Pro. If you have a USB4 port and want the fastest drive, the Samsung T9 tops our board instead.

Buy the Crucial X9 Pro unless your machine has a 20Gbps USB port and you move large files often. That is the only difference the research found: the X9 Pro is limited to 10Gbps where the Crucial X10 Pro offers 20Gbps. Warranty, IP55 rating and build are the same, and both sit in A tier on our board.

It carries Crucial's 5-year warranty, the longest of any A tier drive on our board, and shares the Pro line's build. The research did not flag any failure pattern for it. Keep a second copy of important files anyway, because any drive can fail.

Yes. The PS5 uses USB 3.2 ports at up to 10Gbps, which is exactly the interface the Crucial X9 Pro is built for, so its 20Gbps siblings gain nothing on a console. It can store PS5 games and run PS4 games directly. PS5 games must be copied back to the console's internal storage to play, which is a console rule, not a drive limit.

It is water resistant, not waterproof. IP55 means it shrugs off dust and water jets from any direction, so rain and spills are fine. Do not submerge it. Let it dry fully before plugging it in after it gets wet.
