Corsair EX400U
Wirecutter's tested top pick for durability and speed, and the fastest mainstream-recommended drive here. Sustained-load heat, flagged by Notebookcheck, is the one long-term question mark that keeps it off the top spot.

In the USB4 realm, which is much more widespread than faster Thunderbolt 5, Corsair’s EX400U strikes a great balance between performance and price. Our sequential testing shows it's capable of read speeds above 4,000 MBps, and read speeds over 3,700 MBps. And our sustained Iometer testing showed the drive maintaing a write speed typically between 1,600 and 1,700 MBps for 15 minutes.Read B

The CORSAIR EX400U 4TB does not work on Macs (well at least the MacBook M4 Pro 128 unified), however, the Corsair EX400U 2TB does work perfectly.View post R
While the Corsair EX400U delivers fantastic performance, it does come with some limitations. For instance, the drive's maximum performance requires a USB 4 connection. And on systems that only have USB type-C or Thunderbolt 3, you'll see a decrease in speed. That said, the drive still performs well in these cases, but if you're looking for those blistering speeds, you'll need the latest tech.Watch N
That said, after about 10 minutes of meteous riding, the metal top started the warm up. Not scalding, but noticeably warm to the touch, hitting around 39° C. It is not a dealbreaker, but something you feel if you're holding it during a long export.Watch E
The EX400U also runs warm under sustained load, which can affect long transfers. There's no rugged casing or extra protection. So, this drive is clearly designed for speed rather than durability. So, is it a scam? No. The Corsair EX400U is a legitimate high-performance USB 4 SSD. It reaches its advertised speeds and benchmarks and still delivers excellent realworld performance.Watch

It ranks #4 of 28 on our external SSDs tier list, in A tier. That placement draws on 26 cited sources across 25 outlets.

On our external ssds board, Samsung T9 ranks #1 (S tier) ahead of Corsair EX400U at #4 (A tier). Samsung T9: Ranked here on pure ownership merit, because the hardware and warranty are genuinely excellent. It is still a trap because you pay the Samsung tax for what the Crucial X10 delivers. Buy the X10 or the T7 Shield.
The Corsair EX400U is for people who need a lot of space, up to 4 TB, without paying flagship money. The research found proven endurance in RTINGS tests, NVMe-class USB 3.2 speed and a 3-year warranty, and recorded no cons. If speed matters more than capacity, the Samsung T9 at the top of our board is the faster drive. Do not be tempted by the cheaper high-capacity Samsung T5 EVO, which is in F tier for its slow QLC design.
The research cited proven endurance in RTINGS tests and a 3-year warranty, and found nothing to count against it. That is why it ranks fourth on our board. As with any SSD, keep a second copy of anything you cannot replace.
Yes. Its NVMe-class speed over USB 3.2 loads PC game libraries quickly, and 4 TB holds a large library. On a PS5 or Xbox it can store games and play last-generation titles directly. Current-generation console games must be moved back to internal storage to run, which is true of every external drive.
No. It works on any USB-C port and on USB-A with an adapter. It reaches its highest speed on a USB4 or Thunderbolt port and runs at the port's speed on slower connections. Plug it into the fastest port your computer has.
Use exFAT if it moves between a Windows PC, a Mac and a console, because all of them read and write it. Use NTFS on Windows only or APFS on Mac only for better handling of very large files and permissions. Formatting erases the drive, so copy files off first.
