The WF-1000XM6 earns an eCoustics Editors’ Choice award for 2026 because Sony nailed the delicate balance between sonic performance and real-world usability. These buds are for listeners stepping up from AirPods , Galaxy Buds, or older Sony models who want real sonic credibility without giving up convenience. It’s also for audiophiles who need a no-compromise wireless option for travel, work, and daily use and don’t want to feel like they’re slumming it. In the current TWS landscape, few products blend sound quality, noise cancellation, call performance, and real-world usability this effectively. Highly recommended.

The Nothing Headphone (1) are a great alternative to the Sony WH-1000XM6. You can grab the Nothing Headphone (1) for ( $299.99 at Amazon ), making them a more affordable option. Despite the more affordable price, the Nothing Headphone (1) still deliver a great design, good noise canceling, and highly customizable sound quality. While the ANC and sound quality performance isn’t quite as good as the Sony WH-1000XM6 headphones, these headphones deliver the core features and performance to meet most people’s needs.

Reviewing the Sony WF-1000XM6 true wireless earbuds, the best buds for 2026 (so far) boasting several upgrades vs the XM5. Well over two years in the making, the Sony WF-1000XM6 boast excellent noise cancelling, improved audio features and new (if still chonky) design.

If you want the most complete wireless earbud package you can buy right now, the WF-1000XM6 is it. Sony’s latest flagship delivers 88% average noise reduction across all frequencies, a 4.8/5 MDAQS sound quality score, and a significantly improved mic system with AI-powered beamforming trained on 500 million voice samples. The redesigned oval shape tucks into your ear’s natural anatomy, making it harder to mess up the seal than most earbuds.

When I do want to hear the world around me, the WF-1000XM6 do a tremendous job of achieving what so many before them have attempted: actual audio transparency. The two microphones on the outside of each bud are large and very good at catching everything going on around you. The audio that these mics pipe in when you want it to feel like the earbuds aren’t even there is better than any I have tested.

So, the WF-1000XM6 fared very well because it did a little better than even the full-sized WH-1000XM6 headphones at low frequency noise canceling. And because of the foam tips, you do get more silence in the upper mids and high frequencies than even the AirPods Pro 3.

So, if you find the occlusion on the XM5 and poor call quality in windy conditions a major issue, it might be worth upgrading to the XM6. Now, if you're in the Apple ecosystem, I still think the AirPods Pro 3 are going to be the best option to get. However, the XM6 is not as comfortable as the previous generation, with a divisive design and a fit we found bulky and not as comfortable in as many ears as the XM5. The app has an impressive 10-band equalization adjustment sliders and presets to find the sound that makes you soar, but the app itself is cluttered and not as user-friendly as some competitors. While we love the enjoyable mix and the closest thing to selective active noise cancellation available, the Sonys are expensive and not perfect. For most listeners, there are earbuds we like more, but for anyone seeking the best in noise-blocking abilities, it can only be the Sony XM6.

Don't get me wrong, the WF-1000XM6 earbuds are very good. They sound excellent, fit well enough, and offer better noise cancellation than their predecessors. Meanwhile, the older pair is still available for about $250 and remains worth buying if you want to save some cash.

Sony's going with the interesting polyurethane silicone foam hybrid tip on the XM6, which creates this really secure seal, like really, really secure. There's no chance that these things are going to be falling out of your ears, but the main drawback is that you do feel them in your ears quite a bit more, especially during extended sessions. Like honestly, after an hour, my ears start to hurt. That said, if you're working out or moving around a lot, these foam tips are unlike anything else

If the discussion were purely about sound-per-pound audio quality, you've got to put the Sony WF-1000XM6 new flagship earbuds in the mix. They're cheaper than some of the real audiophile-adjacent wireless options and the sound borders on just as good. But for noise-cancelling efficacy, super clear call-handling, a truly comfortable fit and assorted spatial audio chops, I think Sony's being somewhat overtaken now. Know this: that star-rating is still as high as it is because of the sound

Taken as a whole, the WF-1000XM6 are exceptionally capable earbuds that excel most in sound quality and connection stability. Battery life remains competitive at 8 hours with noise cancelling active, and the feature set is among the most extensive in the category. Yet, the areas expected to lead the class, particularly noise cancelling and spatial audio ecosystem support, no longer dominate as convincingly. Sony has priced them aggressively within the flagship tier, which strengthens their appeal, but competition at this level is fierce and highly specialized
