Sony VPL-XW5000ES
What Hi-Fi?'s number one on pure picture quality, but the Sony premium buys the last ten percent at a disproportionate cost, which this lens punishes.

Sony’s VPL-XW5000ES was a monumental leap forward in terms of performance. Its higher brightness and vastly improved black levels meant it significantly outperformed its predecessors. Indeed, it’s been such a success that the manufacturer is continuing to produce it for the foreseeable future. So rather than the replacement we were expecting, Sony has released a ‘step-up’ model in the form of the VPL-XW5100ES. This uses many of the same technologies as the VPL-XW61000ES, which we reviewed last year, albeit at a higher price.Read P Projector Reviews Projector Reviews · 113K subscribers · Sept 2025
We've sold this projector for many years. Many clients are still very happy with this, and it's going to continue on at that really nice aggressive price pointWatch S StillBlue Home Theater crazaholic1968 · owner · Oct 2022
I just bought this projector for my home theater after watching your review. Thank you so much for the recommendation. :) but now I get a 3 to 4 second input lag every time playing HDR Content on my Netflix using my Shield pro. Pretty much I am staring at a black screen Every time I start a video for four seconds before the display comes up, though the audio is playing on the background.Watch P
When designing the XW5000ES, Sony did a great job finding the right balance of performance, features, and value. Not only is the XW5000ES the least expensive 4K model in Sony’s home theater lineup it is also the least expensive native 4K home theater laser projector on the market.Watch I
Despite its steep price, the Sony VPL-XW5000ES laser projector is actually the most affordable in the XW line (with the fanciest VPL-XW7000 model costing almost $30k – no joke!). While it doesn’t support HDR10+, the advanced image processing is absolutely worth the investment. If you’re looking for a projector for your home cinema, this is a game changer.Read T
Welcome to our comprehensive review of the Sony VPL-XW5000ES, the high-performance 4K SXRD projector that brings stunning visuals, precise color accuracy, and immersive cinematic experiences to your home theater setup!Watch W
However, it became swiftly apparent that all of these things are indeed worth it, as the XW5000ES is a superb home cinema projector, and it even sits in our reference setup to this very day. It delivers a crisp, rich and deeply cinematic picture, with excellent motion and contrast that's only rivalled by the more expensive models in Sony's range.Read U

The end result is an image that looks cleaner, deeper and more three-dimensional than that from the W5850, and despite the Sony having a lower brightness, HDR movies look wonderfully natural and effortlessly cinematic thanks to impeccable contrast. It might have had a worthy challenger, but the Sony VPL-XW5000ES retains its crown.Read P
I think Sony did a great job choosing the most important performance features to deliver the best bang for the buck from the XW5000ES.Read D

I tested a JVC NP5 and a Sony XW5000ES and wound up going with the Sony. The NP5 has the same optics as the NZ-7 and I found Sony's optics to be sharper and its base color balance was also better. The JVC had slightly better black levels, but the sharper focus along with the Sony having much better image sharpening, led me to go with the 5000.Read thread T
Now Sony XW-5000ES is undoubtedly an amazing piece of technology that has helped us bring an amazing immersive experience along with its detailed black levels. Now, Sony's contrast ratio has always amazed me and that is why my belief in this particular product or this particular brand has always been high for the very same reason. But with regards to few drawbacks, these are the four drawbacks which I feel have been hurting us or particularly me the most when I have to talk about this particular projectorWatch S
Magnificent picture, but some drawbacks IMO. Causing big issues with my new Stewart FilmScreen screen and projector mounting.Watch H
Only issue i see with this projector is that it has manual everything… no lens memory, for 5,000+ this should be there.Watch
