As with every model, we rode the Ride1Up Portola 02 up the Devil’s Backbone twice: once on throttle alone and once in its highest pedal assist level. Our test rider, Justin, ran both in Boost with the bike set to Class 2 and torque output at 100%. He reached the top in 2:10 on throttle at an average of 13.9 mph, then cut that to 1:59 at 15.2 mph when pedaling.

We were surprised to see hydraulic disc brakes on the Ride1UP Portola. That’s unheard of on e-bikes in this price range. We weren’t familiar with the Gemma brand, but that’s what our brake test is for.

In my opinion, Ride1Up really went for that beginner friendly mode when it comes to this electric bike. It doesn't overwhelm you with technology that you have to figure out. It doesn't overwhelm you with a large display featuring a whole bunch of information that you probably don't need and as a beginner don't need to pay attention to.

On our electric bikes board, Lectric XP4 750 ranks #1 (S tier) ahead of Ride1Up Portola at #7 (B tier). Lectric XP4 750: The most accessible entry here with genuinely good support for its class, held back by folding-hinge wear and budget components that will not last as long as the bikes above it.

The Ride1Up Portola is for the value shopper who wants a strong motor, a solid build and long battery life at a very low price, and who does not mind a little less polish. It sits in B tier on our board as a lightweight, excellent-value bike. Its one recorded con is that it lacks the refinement and dealer network of the Lectric XP4 750, which is our S tier pick for most people.

Buy the Lectric XP4 750 unless the price gap matters to you. It is the only S tier product on our board, with proven reliability in expert tests and a more established support network. The Ride1Up Portola in B tier gets you a strong motor and long battery life for less, but reviewers call it slightly less refined than the higher-end peers. Both are far better buys than the fat-tire lifestyle bikes at the bottom of the board.

Long battery life is one of the recorded strengths of the Ride1Up Portola, so a typical commute should leave charge to spare. The board does not record a mileage figure for it. As with every e-bike, expect the pack to lose capacity gradually over several hundred full charge cycles, and keep it charged indoors and away from extreme heat or cold to slow that down.

The Ride1Up Portola is a conventional build, so any bike shop can handle brakes, tires and the drivetrain. Ride1Up sells direct and has a leaner parts and support operation than Lectric, which is the refinement gap the board records. If you want a shop network standing behind the bike, the Lectric XP4 750 is the safer pick. The Lectric XP Lite 2.0 is the other light budget option on our board, in C tier.
