I've spent weeks testing the Minelab Vanquish 440 across various UK terrains to see if it lives up to the hype. While its lightweight frame suggests a beginner's tool , the Multi-IQ technology inside tells a different story. It handles mineralised beach sand and iron-rich soil with surprising ease. However, there's one specific field setting that completely changed my perspective on this machine’s actual depth capabilities.

My recommendation: If you want a metal detector that works in any terrain (including wet sand), and hope to find a wide variety of items, the Minelab Vanquish 440 is the best metal detector for most people, priced at a relatively affordable $279.

The 440's weak points were just as well known. It ran on four AA batteries, roughly 10 hours on alkalines. It had no wireless audio at all; that was reserved for the 540. And while the V10 coil was waterproof to 1 m (3.3 ft), the control pod was only water resistant, which is why Minelab shipped a rain cover in the box. Plenty of 440s met their end in an unplanned dunk at the beach.

So far the only "problem" has been the chemical handle. Here? Something thin and small. It looks older, but I have no idea what it is. It's a gear wheel. Copper with some iron. Looks like aluminum. With some holes. A KGB telephone speaker. What a beautiful day. Rather an iron sound. That's WWII shrapnel. Not the cleanest sound from this side.

Unless you find the 440 at a steep discount, the 460 is the more future-proof purchase.
