In summary, the Minelab Equinox 800/900 is an outstanding choice for beginners who want one detector that can do it all , including hunting gold. It offers a balance of convenience and performance – “a very capable general purpose detector, that is also quite capable at finding gold nuggets” . If you plan to prospect in highly mineralized areas and dabble in other treasure hunting, the Equinox gives you that flexibility. Just remember that with its broader skillset comes a bit more complexity. Many Australian prospectors have found gold with Equinox detectors, making them a trustworthy companion as you learn the hobby.

The Minelab Equinox 900 is the most feature-rich metal detector I tested. From the second I picked it up, I could tell that it would be a cut above the rest. The build quality is noticeably better than that of other, less expensive models I tested—it just feels more substantial.

While the 800 remains a solid detector, the 900’s carbon fiber construction elevates it to professional-grade durability and comfort that’s worth every penny.

I had no issues and found some really nice finds including a coin that is over 150 years old! It was a good day on the water for wildlife as well. Enjoy!

How do you find the 800 better than the 900? I find that the 900 has a tad bit more horsepower on depth and better separation.

Throughout the video, I demonstrate how to easily switch your Equinox 900 into 4 kHz and explain how frequency affects depth and target response, making this a must watch for anyone looking to get more out of their detector and uncover hidden treasures others have walked over.

From 100s of hours of hunting with the Equinox 900, Legend 1 and now with almost 100 hours using Legend 2, for me Legend 1 with its original 11" coil was every bit the equal of the Equinox 900 for the categories I mentioned. Legend 2 with the latest V1.02 public release software is slightly better than the Equinox 900 and Legend 1 for the categories I mentioned.

My verdict here is simple: for pure physical comfort, XP wins. For everyday ownership simplicity, Minelab fights back. If fatigue is the problem you are trying to solve, choose the XP Deus II metal detector. If learning curve is the bigger worry, the Minelab Equinox 900 metal detector is the easier routine.

If you want the fixed shaft and the extra polish and you are buying new anyway, that is the case for the 900, not some huge leap in finding power.

I can not, for the life of me, get my 900 to be consistent. I am in the western part of Nebraska and my understanding is that the soil is heavily mineralized.but I have tried lowering sensitivity.around 15, increase recovery speed, etc. but I still get all kinds of "false" hits and ghost targets that seem to move or disappear when I dig. I am really new to using the 900 (and detecting in general) and I'm sure I just need help "dialing it in", but it has been slow going and extremely frustrating. I typically use Park 1 and a custom coin program (in Park 2 space).either setting results in the same outcome.
