I got my C5 yesterday and started the viewing by watching the new season of The Witcher and all I can say is "Wow!" The picture looks better than on my C3, which is no slouch.

Now, if you're considering a refresh of your older LG, you will be happy to know that the new C5 is a clear step up in design over the C2, and it is a definite improvement in build quality over LG's entry-level B series. The C5 is wafer thin around the top and sides of the screen.

The C5 is bright with a capital B. In filmmaker mode with peak brightness set to high, we measured the 2% HDR peak window close to,300 nits on the C5 versus just over 650 nits on the B5. That is a big big difference. As we go down the test slide score, the pattern repeats itself. The C5 is just brighter at every step. Plus, the C5 maintains its peaks far better than the B5 does.

Now, one of the reasons why I really recommend the LG C5 OLED, which I paid 1,800 lb for in the UK. It did come with a free sound bar, but that was significantly more than it is now, is because it performed so close to the LG G5. Now, the LG G5, when I did that head-to-head comparison, it definitely was the better TV, but it was slight.

I love my G5 so far and also had to reduce brightness significantly. HDR is jaw dropping eye candy on this panel.

You see, the special thing about OLED is that every single pixel in an OLED display has its own individual light source behind it. No backlight, no dimming zones. The first thing that hits you is the picture. Not brightness, not resolution, depth. OLED still has this unfair-looking contrast that makes everything feel almost 3D. Black scenes don't look gray. Dark scenes look much cleaner. There is no gray glow in the corners like I'm used to seeing on cheaper TVs. Watching movies at night is where this TV makes the most sense to me. I've been using Filmmaker Mode a lot. It looks natural and does not add that overly smooth motion effect that I usually turn off right away. Skin tones look more normal, and movies feel closer to how I expect them to look.

The C5 is a great TV. I upgraded from a B3. So I can honestly say if you’re wanting to upgrade the C5 will ROCK. When I compare the two there’s not much of a contest. The G5 blows you away. I am about to purchase a C5 and image retention is a big concern. I have a 2021 LG CX 55" and I have been very careful about not leaving static images on the screen but still managed to get burn in simply by watching the same news program every morning - the logo and "tickertape" at the bottom burned into the screen. Hoping the C5 will be better.

The LG was, as expected. It looked absolutely mint, but I was surprised how good the TCL was, too. Now, something I did notice is on the TCL, the colors were a bit more saturated, more vibrant. They did pop more, whereas on the LG, the colors were a bit flatter. Probably more true to how they were actually filmed.

All apps I tried work properly without dropped frames or stability issues, which is good. On the other hand, navigation is still on the slow side and multitasking isn't great. LG promises four major OS updates in the coming years, so let's see if they improve this. Now, HDR performance. The C5 hits around 1,000 nits peak brightness in HDR mode. That's decent, but not spectacular. In a pitch black room, absolutely stunning. In a bright sun drenched living room, it struggles a bit. Not a deal breaker, though. But if you've got a huge windows and no curtains, you might find yourself squinting during daytime viewing. Color accuracy is phenomenal out of the box.

Uh cuz in post I did make sure that I changed the C5 to have the right white balance. So things shouldn't look off at all. And what you're seeing is going to be a difference in peak brightness most of the time. Going to be a difference in panel technology that we're looking at.

You know, HDR impact is a really big conversation when it comes down to HDR TVs, and the C5 definitely delivers on that promise. This is a paused image, and you can see here that the LG C5 is doing a great job. If you want a similar image from the Sony, you could get it, but it comes at a cost.
