The Celestron AstroMaster 70AZ is one of those telescopes that makes sense in certain situations, but it isn’t an obvious recommendation for everyone. It’s cheap, simple and genuinely capable of showing you the moon and planets without much fuss.

This is probably my favorite telescope for beginners, being extremely easy to use, providing reasonable views, and not breaking the bank.

It is my opinion this would be a great starter scope for a youngster getting into the hobby. Low cost and if the child doesn't continue with his or her interest in astronomy you have spent very little. Also the optics are permanently collimated and this makes a nice grab & go lightweight scope.

Telescope Guide Brian · reviewer · Oct 2020

The quality is decent, with a heavy metal main tube and solid stainless steel tripod – but don’t expect this to be a high-end telescope. The Alt-Az mount is easy to use for beginners but does not offer fine slow-motion controls. Both axes are tightened with the same handle.

Trung Nguyen Trung Nguyen · 17 subscribers · Jul 2026

While some mention the panning handle feels a bit short for fine adjustments, this doesn’t take away from the overall experience. Larger movements are smooth, and with a little practice, aiming becomes second nature.

Space Article · Oct 2022

 Celestron AstroMaster 70AZ: This lightweight chromatic refractor uses its relatively long length to produce natural-looking views of planets and the moon, but for anything else it's underwhelming. It's also quite difficult to lock onto targets.

Live Science Article · May 2025

Overall, the Celestron AstroMaster LT 70AZ is an affordable beginner telescope that delivers enjoyable lunar and planetary viewing. Be warned, though, it may be quickly outgrown by more committed or enthusiastic observers and learners.
