Breville Smart Scoop

C
Ranked #5 in Ice Cream Makers
464 LP on the category ladder what's LP?

Excellent build and support reputation, and serious core refrigeration hardware, but it carries the most electronics of any machine here and therefore the most that can eventually fail. The best automated compressor choice if you accept that trade, and the most feature-rich machine on the board.

Flagged as a product to avoid

3 of 18 research runs entered this as a product to avoid rather than a pick.

A genuinely excellent machine that costs several times what the Whynter ICM-201SB does for the same core compressor result. That premium buys convenience features, not better ice cream.

  2. It is good largely because it is expensive: the Whynter ICM-201SB delivers the same no-pre-freeze convenience and foolproof results for a fraction of the outlay, and the Musso Lussino outperforms it at the top. Buy the Whynter ICM-201SB instead.

  3. Ice Cream Science, after a month of testing, found an optimum batch of only about 700ml of mix - tiny output for the outlay - and r/icecreamery owners report it freezes much more slowly than the cheap Cuisinart, around 50 minutes versus 25, contributing to ice crystal formation. Flagship money for small, slow batches.

Several reviewers also mention the small appliance's build quality in their reviews, sharing that it feels very durable and sturdy. The Breville Smart Scoop isn’t a dedicated soft-serve machine, but it earns a spot on this list because it is a great ice cream machine and the texture it produces while churning is just like any soft-serve cone. If you want that iconic swirl in a cone, you’ll need to scoop the finished ice cream into a pastry bag fitted with a star tip and pipe it yourself. It’s not quite the “pull a lever and swirl” experience, but the texture is impressively close.

Breville's Smart Scoop is pricey but one of the best ice cream machines you can buy. I find the built-in compressor really handy because it means I don’t have to pre-freeze a bowl or take up freezer space. Plus, it keeps the bowl at a consistent temperature while churning, which helps produce better ice cream.

The BCI600XL incorporates more air than the Cuisinart ICE-100 (25%) and the Whynter ICM-200LS (10%), resulting in ice cream that is slightly lighter and airier.

This automatic ice cream maker is an excellent choice for beginners and those who don't want to baby-sit their ice cream as it churns. It's also great for people who want the option to hold their ice cream in its soft serve stage. What we didn't like, it's quite expensive. It was also rather slow to freeze, taking about an hour to churn each quart of ice cream and frozen yogurt. The sorbet also took almost an hour, about 20 minutes longer than any other model in the lineup, and though it was thickened and frozen, the machine hadn't advanced past cooling in its progress bar by the time I stopped it manually.

For most people that’s overkill, but if you make ice cream constantly and hate the freezer-bowl dance, it changes your life.

Performance-wise, the Smart Scoop delivers excellent results, but it doesn't dramatically outshine more affordable models in terms of speed or overall quality of the final product. Its unique quirks, like the playful ice cream truck jingle when your dessert is ready, add charm but might not justify the price for everyone. Ultimately, the Breville Smart Scoop is a fantastic choice for those who value precision, convenience, and aesthetic appeal in their kitchen appliances. However, it's not the most practical option for budget-conscious buyers or those with limited counter space. If you're someone who loves the idea of crafting custom frozen desserts with maximum control and can afford to splurge, this might just be the perfect addition to your kitchen.
