I just had to include the Breville Oracle Jet on my list of the best home espresso machines seeing as I finally tested it out recently. Trust me, this latest release from the Aussie powerhouse is as close as you can get to a fully automatic machine while still being able to make authentic espresso and barista-worthy milk foam.

This is definitely my favorite iteration of the Brevilles and I would absolutely buy it again. The good: It’s mostly automatic. You already know that. But there is a tremendous convenience in teeing it up to steam the milk and then auto-queue the brewing. I can walk away, make breakfast and it’s ready in like two minutes.

And I actually think that they do a very good job. So, you get a size setting and it will tell you, you know, a small is 4 oz, medium 5, large 8. But, of course, you can customize that like all the others. The one thing about these two drinks, the cold brew and the cold espresso, is that they are a little bit more picky about a grind size.

However, on the inside—the interior build quality—I’d say they're about a horse a piece. So, let's just go ahead and get started. This one is way nicer. Obviously, under the hood, some big differences. It is now using the ThermoJet, which is new for the Oracle. But, what that means is that is this is no longer a dual boiler machine. You have to brew and then you have to steam.

Very easy and userfriendly. the espresso. The only thing you're going to be able to customize is the volume of it. We're going to keep it as a double espresso that it was. No um changes there. As far as temperature, it's already set at 93. Uh you could go into settings and change it, but 92 93 is exactly where you want to be for espresso. As far as milk, you can change a few things.

The other thing that's been a huge improvement on this model over the original Oracle is the instant heat up time. Now, what that essentially means is that you have a jet boiler in this machine. So, it's heating up instantly.

It tends to brew perfect every time. So I don't play with it too much. I'm happy with it. As you can see, it's 14, 15. You can see the seconds in that little ring right there. And it's a perfect brew coming in. Now if you just want an espresso and you're hardcore, you drink it just like that. Now it's done. It's 27 seconds. I said between 22 and 28, that's about right.

It feels like it's really wellm made, really high quality, and this one is exactly the same. It is a really, really nice espresso machine. The grinding is all automatic. You just pop it in there. It grinds freshly ground coffee for you right then. Also, I make sure it puts the right amount, the dosing, and then even damping. It presses the coffee down for you.

The Oracle Jet comes with an integrated burr grinder that has 45 grind settings. It also automatically grinds, doses and tamps the coffee ready for extraction. It recommends the grind setting depending on extraction time, making it easy to learn how to make a good espresso.

While I was unimpressed at the auto milk foam on the Oracle Jet , it works much better on the Dual Boiler for me, on both 3.5% fat milk, and 1.5% fat milk. It doesn’t do quite as well with alternative milks though. For that, I’d suggest steaming manually.

The real kicker though is the auto milk frothing system. It detects the type of milk you pour in, adjusts the steaming temperature, and even pauses when you reach the ideal texture. That's a huge time-saver if you're juggling a kid's school run and a work-from-home schedule. The downside? The frothing disc takes a minute or two to heat up, so you can't sprint from bean to cup in under a minute.

However, since I did my first look video of this machine at SCA where it was announced, I’d also argue that it’s been one of the most confusing and dare I say controversial machines Breville have launched. It bears the flagship Oracle name, but looking at the spec sheet it almost appears to be a step backwards….
