ULTRALIGHT STOVE – I recently swapped my Jetboil Flash for the Soto WindMaster with 4Flex pot supports because it’s lighter and more versatile—you can use different pots, not just the Jetboil mug. It also lights instantly and boils fast even in windy conditions. Plus, it fit’s nicely inside my ultralight cook pot, along with everything else I need to make a meal.

Thoughts on Size : While the Soto is slightly larger and heavier I feel that the weight and size is justified in that it offers a more stable platform to cook/heat.

The Soto WindMaster ( 4-Flex mode ) ( Tri-flex mode ) is one of the two best backpacking stove burners. It is highly rated, extremely effective in all weather, and built with all of the right features, including cupped head for wind resistance, high BTU output for quick boil, and pressure regulation for use in cold and with near-empty canisters.

If I had packed the BRS 3000T then I can only estimate that I would of used approximately 143 grams of fuel against the 126 grams usage by the Soto Windmaster.

Given its weight, efficiency, performance in wind and average boil time, the Soto WindMaster is the superior stove in this category. It is pricey, but you do get what you are paying for. The micro-regulator is an impressive inclusion on a stove of this size and it performs as advertised, maintaining boil time consistency and performance in temperatures most canister stoves can't handle.

At about 4 oz, this is a great ultralight backpacking stove. We've used it backpacking in various locations the Southeast \u0026 in Canyonlands, Utah at 8,000 ft.

I have been using it since early 2017 and haven't had any issues. It's solidly built and I expect it to last many years.

The windmaster is a great stove, but I wouldn't go out of my way to get it again. To give it an upside, the windmaster's piezo has been nearly perfect: I've done two multi-day trips where I forgot to bring a lighter and it wasn't an issue. (But I do hike pretty much exclusively below 10,000'). It also does burn really well even with minimal wind protection.

Both have strengths. The goal here is to show the tradeoffs clearly so you can decide what works best for your backpacking style.

The Soto Windmaster is an excellent ultralight canister stove — but it is frequently misunderstood and occasionally mis-bought. At 67g it looks dramatically lighter than an integrated system like the Jetboil Flash at 371g. The reality is more nuanced: the Windmaster requires a separate pot, which adds weight, cost, and bulk back into the equation.

So: better than most stoves at this weight and price, but not in the same league as a windscreen-integrated system like the Windmaster or Jetboil. In calm-to-breezy conditions, the concave burner does real work. In a proper gust, you’ll want to find shelter for the stove or step up to the Windmaster.

It’s a convenient feature, but also a common point of failure. The piezo lighter on my WindMaster is still in working order, although it can sometimes take two or three presses to light the gas. I always bring a lighter, matches and/or a fire steel as a backup.
