It’s a decent little camera that does decent video quality. Ironically, our phones do much better quality nowadays. But the zoom is insane. It has a look of kind of retro to its recordings but not quite and can look modern. Depends on the lighting. But I recommend if you’re getting it to switch to XAVC S format and not avchd. It’s better quality and the files will be huge.

Anyway, one of the smallest, lightest camcorders in the world that produces nice video quality, has suprisingly nice stabilization and has an excellent stereo built in mics, is the Sony CX405. It only weighs 6.5 oz! And it's cheap!

The HDR-CX405 is the camcorder I quietly recommend to first-time grandparents, school-event volunteers, and anyone intimidated by buttons. It weighs less than a can of soda, runs forever on a charge, and uses Sony’s familiar Handycam menu so the learning curve barely exists.

The menu is easy to navigate, thanks to the responsive LCD and dedicated buttons. Use the joystick or touchscreen to move through categories such as shooting mode, image quality, and playback options.

The Sony CX405 is capable of shooting 1080p at 60 frames per second and retails at 229.00 but is currently on sale for 199.00 on Amazon and Best Buy websites. Even though this lacks some of the features that are present in the other budget camera that I reviewed and unboxed a few weeks ago, the Canon HFR800, it is cheaper and takes better still images than the Canon.

Sony HDR-CX405 Full HD Handycam in great working condition. This was my personal camera, so I know it works properly. Very clean and has always been stored/protected in the hard case.

Overall, it is worth the 200 bucks it costs. you can upgrade its battery with a battery bank that has a 2A socket. It can record for long periods of time and that is its main PRO. Sony handycams have been a part of my video toolbox for over a decade now and this one keeps the old school idea, its handy.

In 2025, it still offers a rare mix of portability, optical zoom, and simple controls that many creators and families quietly prefer over shooting everything on a phone.

For those who need to save all the space and weight they can, this may be a good choice. Others would likely be better served by a larger, more fully featured camera.
