SMSL PL200T

Ranked #11 in CD Players

431 LP on the category ladder what's LP?

Superb measured performance and a genuinely versatile box (CD transport, DAC, headphone amp). Ranks last among the picks because SMSL is a young brand in this product class, the MKII is new, and its decade-long parts, firmware and support story is unproven compared with every deck above it.

The PL200T has been a terrific addition to my system. I have it running to my Gustard A26 DAC via I2S and have both units connected to a Aune XC1 digital clock. Also using LPS to the transport for power. My CD’s sound wonderful to my ears and is a big improvement over the Marantz CD5004 I had before. But using the PL200T as a DDC is a remarkable feature often overlooked in reviews.

I did for sure find a badass little CD transport that looks as good as it works for under 500 bucks.

That's actually a pretty sweet little device. This is the SMSL PL200T. It may look familiar to the previous release, the PL200, but this is actually the new T version, which stands for transport. If you're unaware, when I say CD transport, just think about the DAC or the absence of DAC in this case.

PL200T - very nice review! Do you also stream music? If so, which streamer? Would you consider reviewing the N100 streamer which also fits this stack? I would be interested in how it sounds compared to the CD transport. Which external clock do you use? Looking forward to the comparison with the G1!

It should last longer. The magnetic puck included keeps the disc firmly in place. It helps reduce vibration. There's no noisy eject motors. Operation feels smoother, more direct. And for some of us, it's a nostalgic, hands-on experience that makes listening to CDs much more enjoyable. Now, let's see what's in the box. Now, the PL200T comes attractively packaged.

+1 for SMSL PL200T. For around 2k I acquired the SMSL and a used Denafrips Venus II 12th and connected with I2S. Really sweet. I do find that the PL200T is a little sensitive to scratches on my very old(er) CDs. Bought SMAL on Amazon.

The SMSL delivers a more musical and detailed sound, not a day and night difference, but noticeable after long listening sessions. I use the XLR output fed into a Primare DAC30 converter. The results are just, stunning!

And finally, after a lot of waiting to receive one, I have it and it is everything you want in a transport. Let's first start with build quality. This is a very sturdy aluminum device and design language is updated design language of SMSL. It follows modern rebrand of SMSL through language of silver color and have this oval patterns.

Look at that beauty. Hefty. Pretty hefty. Some of you have already seen this probably on YouTube already. There's the back end of it right there. As you can see, all the nice plugins. It's just a transport, remember. And there's some good rubber feet on the bottom as you see. Beautiful rubber feet. They're at least to protect it there. So, there it is. And I'll take this off. Show you.

In fact the PL200 is better built in my opinion ie the lid. Using the digital out bypasses the internal DAC on the PL200 and the bonus is it sounds great with it’s own DAC if needs be.

But if those aren't your key motivations, the value and benefit of the PL200T gets a bit more situational. Situation one, you want a CD transport with I squareds or AES output. If you have a DACK that can accept an AES or an I squareds input, you might prioritize those connection types. You might want a CD transport that specifically has them, and that is the PL200T.
