The Petzl ACTIK CORE has been a fixture near the top of our headlamp rankings for years, and the latest update gives us even more reason to keep it there. It is bright, reliable, and legitimately easy to use right out of the box. The latest update bumps max output from 600 to 625 lumens, though the more significant upgrade is the long-overdue move to USB-C charging.Read S

I’ll cut to the chase here: this is a good head torch that ticks pretty much all the boxes for me as a hiker, trail runner, and long-distance walker. The biggest tick? Its dual-battery capability. This is what Petzl call a Hybrid Concept head torch, meaning it can run off three AAA batteries or off the removable USB-C rechargeable battery that it comes with.Read A A Scotsman Outdoors A Scotsman Outdoors · 1.6K subscribers · May 2026

The Petzl ACTIK is a dependable, well-built headlamp that earns its reputation for ease of use and light quality — but it operates in a crowded price bracket where the competition has pushed the bar on output, waterproofing, and value. At 98g with batteries and 450 lumens of smooth, color-accurate light, it does its job without drama for the vast majority of backpacking situations.Read L
It has 3 brightness levels and an average runtime of around 2 hours on the highest setting. We'd like to see this improved slightly, but you'll still get up to 7 hours on the medium setting. The red light setting is good for preserving night vision and not disturbing wildlife or other people.Read N
The downside is the price—since the Gentos can cover equivalent or better uses for about half the price, it can easily become overkill if cost is your top priority.Read S
