Microsoft Surface Pro (12th Edition)
The worst ownership proposition realistically cross-shopped in this category: extra-cost keyboard and pen, Windows-on-ARM friction, and battery life behind the flagships it is marketed against. Buy a laptop if you need Windows, or the Apple iPad Pro (M5) if you need a tablet.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 12 is perhaps the most interesting such option as of 2025/2026, the popular Surface tablet format with a beautiful display, good ergonomics and premium construction, starting at just under $1000 (for the tablet alone, as the keyboard folio and the pen are extras). Make sure you understand the peculiarities and potential software incompatibilities of the Windows for ARM variant that runs on these Snapdragon models.Read J
It feels very solid. For reference, the M4 iPad Pro was 5.1 millimeters thick, which is a pretty substantial difference. As we work our way through the Mohs scale of hardness, there's also a substantial difference in the capabilities. The M4 iPad is running iPad OS, which is closer to a jumbo sized iPhone than a computer, while the Surface Pro is running full blown Windows.Watch C
You can almost always find both models at a discount from Microsoft, and I like getting the 12-inch Surface Pro with a 512GB SSD for less than $1,000 with its current $200 discount. What I like less is the $70 charge I need to pay for the charger with the 12-inch model, which narrows the gap to only $100 between it and the baseline 13-inch model.Read C

Both are expensive, but Microsoft's Surface Pro for Business pricing, even more than the standard Surface Pro, pushes it well beyond the iPad Pro (at least without a commercial-purchase discount). The new Surface Pro, one of the company's first Copilot+ AI PCs, is astoundingly fast and power-efficient, thanks to Qualcomm's new Snapdragon X Elite chip. It can run native Arm apps well — but even better, it can also emulate older apps without much fuss. The Surface Pro 12-in features a larger 12-in display, a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon X Plus processor, and a refined keyboard with an integrated slim pen cradle. What I didn't expect was I started using this tablet for everything. I've had this for many years and it was time to get a replacement. I struggled to understand how anyone would buy a mobile system like the Pro on anything other than an ARM CPU. Well, there is one obvious reason: unparalleled compatibility for legacy systems. ARM systems still need emulation software to support, for instance, Windows-based Intel X86 code. That situation is improving, but it's still less than perfect, and for business users who have some almost ancient software, they cannot afford to mess around with a mobile chip parading as desktop silicon when they know it won't, for instance, run their old banking software.Read B

The Surface Pro 13 with Snapdragon X2 Elite is a very good tablet whose headline upgrade is the graphics, not the processor. In independent testing its CPU lands only a few percent ahead of last year's model, while the GPU is roughly 40% faster. It also costs $300 more than the outgoing version. Whether that's outstanding or merely good enough depends almost entirely on what you were going to do with it.Read A

So, real talk, is Microsoft completely out of their mind, or is there actually a person out there who should spend this kind of money? Let me answer that. But first, you need to understand what this thing even is. This is not the Surface Pro you see at Best Buy. That one runs on a Snapdragon chip. This business version runs on Intel's new Panther Lake processor, and here is why that matters. The Snapdragon version sometimes struggles with older Windows apps or weird corporate software. This Intel version, everything just works. No emulation, no this app is not compatible. Every piece of software your office computer runs will run on this.Watch P

On paper, it sounds like a clean deal, but the moment you start using it day-to-day, you start noticing what Microsoft removed to reach that $799 price tag. The first thing that stands out the moment you hold it is the build. It's unbelievably light, around 1.5 lbs, and thin enough to slip into any bag without thinking about it. The aluminum body still looks premium and the kickstand is as flexible as always.Watch T

soooooooo disappointed my surface pro 12 cannot even cast wirelessly a small 4k video of 160mb , 10s , mp4 file onto the TV . it judders , lags and stops and starts .checked the task manager when its not even casting , just playing a 4k video requires 90% of the GPU . I do think that this and most other Surface products are very expensive for the performance of the machine. They are obviously aimed at the high-end super-thin, premium look/finish market. If you want something that just has similar performance, you can get it for a whole lot less.Read answer C
And the new 12th Edition of the Surface Pro, unfortunately, I'm here to say that you may not want to purchase the 12th Edition device. You may instead want to get an 11th Edition device, and hopefully we see some major discounts on the 11th Edition, but here's what's going on. We've all heard about how great Panther Lake is. I've done videos about Panther Lake.
