So, this is my Kobo Clara BW. It has a 6-in paper-like e-ink screen which makes reading feel much closer to a physical book.

If you plan to use your e-reader to just borrow library books, I found the Kobo Clara BW sufficient to scratch that itch. It’s the base Kobo model, but it still has a 6-inch E Ink Carta 1300 HD display. Its text is crisp, too, and it offers an adjustable backlight, both of which I appreciated when reading The Three-Body Problem .

Frequently asked questions

It ranks #4 of 18 on our e-readers tier list, in A tier. That placement draws on 13 independent outlets.

On our e-readers board, Kobo Clara BW ranks #4 (A tier) ahead of Onyx Boox Go Color 7 (Gen II) at #11 (D tier). Onyx Boox Go Color 7 (Gen II): The Go Color 7 (Gen II) has a color screen but suffers from a sluggish interface and limited app support.

On our e-readers board, Kobo Clara BW ranks #4 (A tier) ahead of Kobo Elipsa 2E at #14 (F tier). Kobo Elipsa 2E: Adds note-taking to the Kobo line, and its stylus support is solid for the price.

Readers who want a small, cheap, long-lived monochrome reader outside the Amazon store. It shares Kobo's repairable 2024 design, it is compact, and owners report lifespans of four or five years minimum with a decade not unlikely. The monochrome panel also sidesteps the colour-layer aging that affects colour e-ink. If you want page-turn buttons and a larger screen, step up to the Kobo Libra Colour. If you want the deepest support network and the consensus pick, the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (2024) is the board's S tier choice.

Four to five years at minimum on community reports, and a decade is not unlikely. Two things drive that. The monochrome panel has no colour layer to age, and the 2024 chassis is designed for repair, so a tired battery or a cracked screen can be replaced rather than retiring the device. Treat the screen as glass and keep it in a case, because drops are the one failure no design prevents.

The Kobo Clara BW for book reading. The two share the same repairable chassis, but the colour layer on the Kobo Clara Colour slightly reduces text contrast and monochrome panels age better, which is why the board ranks the BW in A tier and the Colour in B. Buy the Kobo Clara Colour only if you read comics, magazines or illustrated books where colour matters. For novels the BW is crisper, cheaper and will likely last longer.

Yes. The Kobo Clara BW shares Kobo's repairable 2024 design, which provides replacement batteries and screens with guides through Kobo's iFixit partnership. It takes basic tools and patience rather than a service visit. That is the main reason the board expects this reader to outlive sealed rivals.

No. The Clara is Kobo's compact touch-only reader, so you turn pages by tapping or swiping the screen. If physical buttons matter to you, for one-handed reading or reading with gloves, the Kobo Libra Colour is the Kobo model with buttons and sits one place above the Clara BW on our board.
