Very fast and a strong overclocker on a high-end Intel system, but it only pays off with the right board and CPU, it has no EXPO profile for AMD, and for most gamers the gain over slower kits is small.

About this product

The G.Skill Trident Z5 RGB F5-7200J3445G16GX2-TZ5RK is a 32GB DDR5 desktop memory kit made of two 16GB sticks with a black heat spreader and an RGB light bar. It boots at 4800 MT/s and reaches its rated 7200 MT/s at 34-45-45-115 and 1.40V once you enable its Intel XMP 3.0 profile in the BIOS.

G.Skill designed this kit for compatible Intel platforms, and it carries no AMD EXPO profile. It needs a capable setup to run its rated speed. TechPowerUp found it best suited to Intel Z790 boards with 13th Gen processors and warned it will not work on many Z690 boards, while Tom's Hardware's Ryzen 7 7700X topped out at DDR5-6400. PC Gamer points AMD AM5 owners to 6000 MT/s kits instead.

Tom's Hardware and TechPowerUp both tested this exact black kit on Intel systems. It suits enthusiasts with a high-end Intel build who want top memory speed or like to tune it further.

Specifications

Pros & cons

  • ✓ Placed second overall in Tom's Hardware's Intel tests, ahead of the T-Force Delta RGB DDR5-7200 C34
  • ✓ Ran stably throughout Tom's Hardware's testing
  • ✓ Reached DDR5-7600 at 1.45V in Tom's Hardware's overclocking test
  • ✓ TechPowerUp found great overclocking ability from its SK hynix A-die chips
  • ✓ Limited lifetime warranty
  • ✗ Intel XMP profile only, and Tom's Hardware's Ryzen 7000 system could not run 7200 MT/s
  • ✗ TechPowerUp says it needs an Intel Z790 board and a 13th Gen Core K processor for best results, and many Z690 boards will not run it
  • ✗ PC Gamer warns that XMP above 7000 MT/s can be tricky, with some motherboards applying high voltages you must correct by hand
  • ✗ Small gains for most gamers: TechPowerUp says average frame rates may not change in systems held back by the graphics card
  • ✗ Runs at only 4800 MT/s until you enable its profile in the BIOS

Frequently asked questions

It ranks #8 of 15 on our RAM tier list, in C tier. That placement draws on 2 independent outlets.

Only on a capable Intel setup. G.Skill says the rated speed depends on the motherboard and CPU. TechPowerUp notes that at review time G.Skill had validated the kit only with Intel 13th Gen CPUs on Z790 boards, and that many Z690 boards will not run it. Check the kit's motherboard QVL on G.Skill's site before you buy.

Not at its rated speed in practice. The kit has only an Intel XMP profile, and Tom's Hardware's Ryzen 7 7700X topped out at DDR5-6400, so 7200 MT/s was out of reach. PC Gamer recommends 6000 MT/s kits with EXPO, such as G.Skill's Trident Z5 Neo, for AMD AM5 builds.

Yes. The kit boots at 4800 MT/s. Enable its XMP profile in the BIOS to reach 7200 MT/s at 34-45-45-115 and 1.40V. PC Gamer warns that some motherboards apply high voltages with XMP at this speed, so check the voltages after you enable it.

Often, with more voltage and some luck. Tom's Hardware ran it at DDR5-7600 at 1.45V, and TechPowerUp says A-die kits land anywhere from 7200 MT/s to upwards of 8600 MT/s. Both stress that results are not guaranteed, and TechPowerUp suggests direct airflow over the memory.

G.Skill lists the Trident Z5 RGB at 44mm (1.73in), while Tom's Hardware measured 42mm. Plan around G.Skill's 44mm figure and compare it with the memory clearance your cooler's maker lists.
