Setting up the Fosi Merak CD player was simple. I plugged in the USB-C power cable, connected it via line out directly to my preamp, and pressed play. All of the operations were simple and straightforward, I haven’t actually looked at the manual yet. Probably won’t need to.

For me it plays great! The display may be a little bit suspect. I think some of the numerals are a little dimmer than the others. I'm keeping my eye on that.

But, if you have any demanding or hard to drive planar magnetic headphones, for example, or something like your Sennheiser HD 650, this is going to struggle with things like that. Now, around on the back, there are a few things. We've got the ESP, which is your skip protection. Then, there's a 3.5 mm single-ended line out, so you can send this to an amplifier or powered speakers.

Doesn't match other Fosi gear is a fail. Top load is a fail. No reason to buy this one. The sliding volume is dumb too.

Portable? Fosi, my friends, it has no internal battery. It doesn't even have a latch to keep the lid from opening and closing. So, if you turn it upside down on your morning jog, you're not going to get electronic skip protection. You're going to get a flying projectile of 1980s hair metal go slicing through the air. A big thanks to Limm and Fosi Audio for sending this out for review.
