Um, we loved it. We felt like it was very easy for us to install into the car. Um, it easily detaches from the base. In the back here, there's an orange button. You just pull that and it lifts right out of the base. Um, which is really easy when you're trying to get in and out of the car. Um, you've got a tightening button here.

If you would rather skip the infant-carrier stage and buy one seat for several years, look at the Britax One4Life Slim or the Graco Extend2Fit Convertible instead.

Reviewers credit the Chicco KeyFit 35 with excellent crash-test results and the highest safety rating among infant seats on our board. Much of that comes from installation: a seat that goes in tight and stays tight protects better, and this one is praised for exactly that. Every seat sold in the US must pass the same federal crash standard, so this is margin above the floor rather than a pass or fail difference.

Not hard. Easy, reliable installation is the most repeated praise for the Chicco KeyFit 35 across our research runs, and it is the main reason the seat sits at rank 1. Install the base once with LATCH or the seat belt, check it moves less than an inch at the belt path, and the carrier then clicks in and out.

Like any infant seat, the Chicco KeyFit 35 is outgrown by height or weight, usually around the first birthday, rather than by age. Check the limits printed on the seat and move on when the top of the head is within an inch of the shell. The seat itself carries a maker's expiry date, typically several years from manufacture, so it can serve a second child if it has never been in a crash.

Remove the fabric cover and wash it as the care label directs, usually a cold gentle cycle and air drying. Wipe the shell and buckle with mild soap and water. Do not use bleach, solvents or lubricants on the harness or buckle, because they weaken the webbing and can stop the buckle latching.
