It seems like a good machine. And if it were under warranty, I'd feel like I was getting a deal at the current price I can buy it at. But if it should randomly break on me, it'd feel more like I'd wasted money. Since I know it's suggested often - I don't have the opportunity to try the machine (or really any machine; there aren't sewing machine stores where I live) beforehand.

If you can get the machine back to normal, rather than servicing it, I would spend the money on a pre-1970, all metal machine that can handle your heavier duty needs. Often such machines need a bit of TLC, but not all that much. Singers are good options because there are parts available and lots of diy videos regarding them.
