In the 55- to 75-quart range, we like RovR Products' RollR 60 best: It offers a good balance of storage capacity, ice retention, and features that should meet the needs of most small groups on extended weekends or larger families on overnight trips. But at more than 26 inches long and almost 20 inches high, it does take up a sizable amount of space in a trunk or pickup bed.

If your idea of using a cooler involves dragging it across sand, gravel, or a rough campground road — and you want ice that lasts for a real multi-day trip — this is a seriously capable choice, and the wheels do the heavy work for you. But if you're mostly loading a cooler into the trunk for pavement-bound beach days and tailgates, its weight and bulk are more than you need.
