I have owned 4 other Martin high end guitars since 1969 but this HD-28 lights me up. I have to play it everyday. It simply calls to me. The joy I receive from playing it is beyond description. I am not a star performer but I’m not bad as a player. That being said, this instrument inspires me to keep doing the work that we all know is necessary to be the best creative human that we can be.

All right, so, um, we're going to tell you about it, but basically it's a very cool, very patriotic art piece in celebration of our nation's history and anniversary. Um, and uh, you know, along with fireworks, hot dogs, rock and roll, and so on, we've got the flat-top acoustic guitar created by Martin in the US that's benefited uh, music the world over.

Built on the foundation of Martin’s legendary HD-28, it delivers the bold, balanced Dreadnought tone players have long trusted: powerful bass, clear trebles, and rich overtones shaped by forward-shifted scalloped X-bracing and time-honed craftsmanship.

>> If you're want if you're playing in a lot of jams and you're need you're not playing plugged in or anything, you want to be heard, absolutely 100% this is a great guitar for that. If you're doing kind of big, you know, open strummy singer songwriter stuff, this is built for that, too. Um I think that a having a car guitar this big does gain a lot of versatility.

Because the guitar that I picked up and fell in love with the feel and sound of, causing me to keep going back to play it every time I went anywhere near the store, happened to be a Martin.

>> It's obviously louder. There's way more bass response, but you can also play a lot lighter and still get the same volume you would out of a regular 18 or HD-28. And there's also this space that it occupies, if that makes any sense. If you are in a bluegrass picking circle, you're not just louder and providing more low end, it's this breath of volume and space that you're taking up.

This combination is known for delivering particularly complex overtones, rich bass tones, and distinctive projection. And the even larger body provides more of everything.

And one of the things that I really loved about this guitar over the standard D28 was the low end and the bass response on this guitar. Um, that was that was the game changer for me and that's what helped me pull the trigger on this guitar was just how good the low end sounded. And it sounds absolutely awesome live and on recordings as well. And I found the HD28 to be a great recording guitar.

Obviously, the acoustic guitar wins. Uh but I do find that the K&K has a really really nice sound. It It works much better than a Pietu. Um and then when we have the shotgun mic and you can hear the guitar and the amp, uh I think that's a really nice live sound. of course. Um either one's going to work really well, though. I'm super impressed.

Frequently asked questions

It ranks #2 (S tier) on our consolidated acoustic guitars board, drawn from 20 cited sources across 18 outlets.

The Martin HD-28 is for a player who wants the benchmark dreadnought, the guitar that reviewers measure other high-end acoustics against. It ranks second on our acoustic guitars board, in S tier, praised for its iconic tone, exquisite craftsmanship and next-level comfort and durability. Buy it if you strum and flatpick and want the classic sound. If you prefer a more modern, detailed voice, the Taylor 314ce Studio ranks first in the same tier. If the budget is tight, the Yamaha FG-800 in A tier is the value pick.

A lifetime. Reviewers cite the Martin HD-28 for next-level comfort and durability alongside its exquisite craftsmanship, and the board recorded no reliability complaints across seven research runs. Solid-wood guitars of this kind are routinely played for fifty years and passed on. Keep it humidified and out of hot cars and it will outlast its owner.

Yes. The D in HD-28 stands for dreadnought, the large, deep body shape Martin made famous. A dreadnought is loud with a strong bass, which suits strumming and flatpicking in a group. It is also the biggest common body shape, so smaller players or anyone who plays mostly seated may find a concert-sized guitar more comfortable.

Both are S tier on our board and the reviews treat the Taylor 314ce Studio as a strong alternative to the Martin rather than a replacement. Pick the Martin HD-28 for the iconic dreadnought tone and traditional craftsmanship. Pick the Taylor 314ce Studio for pristine, hyper-detailed engineering, a balanced tone and built-in electronics for plugging in. The Martin HD-28 is a plain acoustic, so if you need a pickup the Taylor is the simpler choice.

Yes, whenever indoor air drops below about 45 percent relative humidity, which is most heated homes in winter. The Martin HD-28 has a solid spruce top and solid wood moves with moisture. Dry air shrinks the top, sinks the action and can crack the wood. A case humidifier is cheap insurance for a guitar at this level.
