I love how the classic ceramic dripper keeps heat steady, because my coffee no longer tastes like it got distracted halfway through brewing. The spiral ridges and cone shape make me feel like I am in total control, even when I am just enthusiastically pouring water like a caffeinated wizard.Read L Liz Happybeans Liz Happybeans · 28.8K subscribers · Feb 2023

The V60 Size 02 is great for making 1-4 cups of coffee. I appreciate it might be a little too involved for a busy weekday morning, but for lazy weekends, you can’t go wrong. Plus it’s dirt cheap and takes up very little room.Read H

Ceramic looks better and feels more permanent, but it pulls heat out of your water while you bloom and pour, because you cannot realistically preheat a ceramic cone to brew temperature and hold it there. Plastic barely steals any heat at all. If you want the most stable extraction and you do not care about the look, the plastic V60 is the one to buy, and it costs under a tenner. Choose glass only if you want the visual and you are happy to preheat it thoroughly first.Read L Lance Hedrick Lance Hedrick · 450K subscribers · Jul 2026
So, this can produce a more unstable result, which I think is why many people find flat-bottomed pourovers more stable than V60s.Watch C

The Hario V60 can make some exceptional coffee, but it can also be surprisingly sensitive to your technique, the coffee, and even the paper filter you use. Change one of those variables, and your fast 2 and 1/2 minute clean brew can suddenly become 5 minutes. The new Hario Alpha keeps the familiar 60° cone, but completely changes the internal geometry. Instead of the V60's raised spiral ribs, it uses 12 concave channels to hold the filter closer to the walls and guide water down through the brewer. The Alpha is made in Taiwan from lightweight, shatter-resistant Tritan plastic. It uses the standard V60 01 filter and is currently only available as the 1 to 2 cup 01 brewer.Watch C

People are surprised to learn that I believe the $12 plastic V60 outperforms the $40 ceramic version. And it’s not close. The ceramic V60 has a high thermal mass. When 96°C water hits a room-temperature ceramic cone, the ceramic absorbs heat and takes a while to reach equilibrium. Your slurry temperature can drop 4–6°C within the first 30 seconds, and that is exactly when extraction matters the most. Light roasts will always be under-extracted unless you waste a full kettle preheating the ceramic.Read C
The plastic V60 02 has a real thermal advantage over the ceramic: plastic thermal conductivity runs about 0.1–0.2 W/m K versus ceramic at 3.0–4.0 W/m K, which means the ceramic V60 causes a slurry temperature drop of 4–6°C within the first 30 seconds of a cold brew session.Read
