Bowflex Results Series SelectTech 552

For most people: buy the 552s. They save space, money, and hassle compared to owning 15 pairs of dumbbells. The math often favors the adjustable set: the amount of weight and the range mean you can do nearly any routine without filling a room with iron. However, if you train with very heavy loads daily, want precise feel for each weight, or need commercial-grade durability, fixed dumbbells might still be worth it — but that’s a bigger investment in both cash and space.

The Bowflex SelectTech 552 is the best all-around adjustable dumbbell for most home gym owners. The dial mechanism remains the fastest and most intuitive weight-change system on the market. The 2.5 lb increments in the lower range are legitimately useful for progression. The footprint is unmatched for what you get.

The handle is contoured and comfortable, but at nearly 17 inches long, it's noticeably wider than a standard dumbbell. That extra length can feel awkward on close-grip movements and some shoulder exercises. And the build? Mostly plastic with metal plates inside. It's not the most premium feel in your hands, and that raises some durability questions we'll get to shortly. The weight range runs from 5 lb all the way up to 52.5 lb per dumbbell. For most home gym users, that's genuinely versatile. Beginners can start light and progress. Intermediate lifters can handle squats, presses, and rows at real working weights. The 2.5-lb increments at the lower end are a nice touch.
