Marketed as a high-performance SATA SSD, but reviews consistently note its slower speeds (max ~500 MB/s) and limited endurance compared to more mainstream SATA drives at similar price points.

Read B
Cue the sad trombones because, man, I really wanted to keep this one. Now, originally, my plan was to use this to upgrade the actual Steam machine. 4 TB Steam machine, but because I'm still on the reservation list for that thing, and I can't be making my new friends at Biwin wait forever for me to show this thing off in a video for them, well, plan B it is. So, I'm doing two things here.Watch C
Biwin Black Opal NV7400 M.2 SSD offers sequential read speeds of up to 7450 MB/s and random read speeds of up to 1000K IOPS. NV7400 SSD features PCIe Gen 4×4 interface and supports NVMe 2.0. Equipped with high-quality 3D TLC NAND Flash and graphene thermal pad for smart thermal control, NV7400 delivers high-end PCIe Gen4 performance.Read I
It uses highquality 3D TLC NAND which is exactly what is needed for long-term reliability and consistent performance over years of use. One of the most impressive things about this drive is the thermal management. BWIN went with a super thin 0.5 mm graphine aluminum heat sink. It is slim enough to fit into a cramped laptop or a PS5 without any clearance issues.Watch G
Storage is handled by the NV7400 1TB, a PCIe 4.0 x4 drive that covers the basics properly. It’s rated at 7,400 MB/s sequential reads and 6,500 MB/s writes at this capacity, which is worth stating clearly, because the 2TB model is rated at 7,450 MB/s and that’s the number that gets quoted for the whole family.Read C
While the Biwin Black Opal NV7400 opts for the more established PCIe Gen 4.0 standard, but still offers class-leading speeds of 7,450 MB per second with its smart cache and host memory buffer technology, providing stable performance for demanding applications.Watch T
The Biwin NV7400 doesn’t have DRAM, but it does have good performance, good power efficiency, and a good warranty with high TBW. The cost of DRAM has made DRAM-less SSDs more attractive than usual, but some are better than others. The NV7400 should be near the top of the list for PCIe 4.0 choices.Read I
My tests attest to the NV7400’s very economical behavior in idle mode and a moderate power consumption profile under load. At idle, the SSD is extremely energy-efficient; this is due to the DRAM-less MAP1602 platform with aggressive power-saving states.Read T
Biwin did a great job with this drive, and we can recommend it for pretty much any system, so if its price is at or below similar contenders like the MP44, then it’s an easy choice. Assuming things stay that way.Read C

In this context, the NV7400 appears much more robust despite its weakness at half full capacity, because it is based on TLC and its TLC plateau is stable at around 900 to 1000 MB/s. The NV7400 can therefore be ranked as follows: It offers extremely high initial values when empty and is thus clearly positioned above the Crucial P3 Plus. However, it falls behind the Lexar NM790 as soon as the fill lRead N
However, it's generally advisable to use a heat sink for NVME SSDs, especially if you're putting them under greater load. Use either a dedicated heat sink or the one provided by the motherboard. Now, when I peel off the sticker and graphine thermal pad, the components underneath are fully revealed. It quickly becomes obvious that the extremely popular Maxotech MAP6002 controller is used.Watch T
The Black Opal NV7400 is considered a budget PCIe 4.0 drive because it’s DRAM-less with only a four-channel controller, and there is a lot of competition in this space. At the top, you’re looking at drives with TLC flash – this flash is faster and has higher endurance than QLC – and specifically newer, faster TLC flash that can saturate the PCIe 4.0 link.Read J
Now, because it is Gen 5, heat's going to be the main thing to keep an eye on. But this again has got a graphine pad and also a thermal control algorithm, but you will want to use a proper motherboard heat sink or even a dedicated MVME cooler if you're planning to hit the drive often, for example, if you're going to be using it for editing.Watch P
It's a little slower on 4K random speeds, at 74 MB/s read and 229 MB/s write, and it's the write speeds that are a way off the competition. It runs incredibly cool, at least, and for most gamers, it should be plenty fast enough.Read T
