Rounding out the top tier for comfort, the Therm a Rest NeoAir XLite NXT and the Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XTherm NXT also rank among the strongest overall performers. While their horizontal baffle designs do not cradle the body quite as closely, both pads are still a plush three inches thick and provide sufficient padding for a comfortable night of sleep.

All told, the NeoAir XLite NXT is Therm-a-Rest’s most uncompromised offering yet. It was one of our editor's steeds of choice for each trail of the Triple Crown (AT, PCT, and CDT), and kept him cozy through a full spectrum of conditions and climates. He won't set off on a long trek with anything else (unless it's a full-blown winter excursion).

This pad landed at the top of our list thanks to its impressive specs—the 3-inch baffles, 13-ounce weight, 30-denier surface material, and 4.5 R-value make it hard to beat for warmth-to-weight. Further, the pad rolls up to the size of a Nalgene, and the updated WingLock valve significantly reduces inflation time compared to prior models.

Therm-a-rest's NeoAir XLite has a 4.5 R-value but weighs merely 13 ounces (in its regular mummy version), and it’s one of our favorite backpacking sleeping pads out there in terms of warmth-to-weight for three-season hiking. The Nemo Tensor All-Season—another high-scoring model—boasts an R-value of 5.4 and weighs 1 pound 2 ounces.

Our editor’s verdict: This mat is a popular option for backpackers for a reason. It has a high amount of padding and the right kind of insulation levels for UK four-season use. Packable, easy to inflate (especially with the pump sack it comes with), it is a little on the delicate side though.
