Nikon Monarch M7 10x42 Binoculars

S Space Article · Nov 2025

I’d heartily recommend the Nikon Monarch M7 8x42 for this reason. Of course, you could opt for one of the other three model variants (8x30, 10x30 or 10x42), which are of equal quality. However, if you are using these regularly for stargazing then we’d perhaps advise against the 8x30 model only, due to the light restriction you would see with the smaller 30 mm objective lenses.

The Nikon Monarch M7 10x42 ranks fifth on our Best Binoculars list with a 9.1 , and it earns that spot by proving how much of the alpha-class experience is available well below alpha-class pricing. At $750 — a quarter of what our top-ranked binocular costs — it pairs genuine ED glass with a field of view wide enough to actually track birds, not just a spec-sheet number. Buy it if you're a serious birder who wants real optical performance without a four-figure commitment. It won't match a $3,000-plus alpha's outright brightness or edge sharpness, but it gives up far less than the price gap suggests.

The Monarch M7 is the most comfortable pair of binoculars we tested, and looking through the lenses feels like peering through a high-powered window—free from the distortion and tunneling that plague many designs. The M7 also comes in at an approachable price, and impressively, there are no meaningful sacrifices in quality. For hundreds—and sometimes thousands—of dollars less than premium competitors, they deliver comparable performance. While the M7 does lag behind some models in low-light brightness at dawn or dusk, enough color comes through to discern fine details like feather patterns on brightly colored birds.

Optical Quality: Both offer excellent optical clarity, but the Nikon Monarch M7 has a slight edge in color accuracy and low-light performance due to its coatings and ED glass.

I rate the Monarch M7 image as good but not perfect, chromatic aberration (color fringes around objects) is well controlled in the image center but not towards the edge. Contrast is very good but not always as good as with naked eyes. Do I expect too much? And, bright light sources from behind me, or near the entry pupil, can cause internal flaring.
