I knew when I originally saw what Minisforum had actually pulled off in the MS-01 that this would be a game changer for home lab servers and I think I was right on that front. I can’t believe it has been two years since then, but now the MS-03 has been released and feels like the natural successor of the MS-01.

So, the repair has worked. And much to my surprise, they repaired the motherboard inside this thing as opposed to replacing it, which is honestly what I was expecting. Now, some of the soldering you you can see here that it's it's really tiny stuff that we're dealing with.

The node runs Proxmox 24/7 with my mail VM on it and has been stable for over a year and a half.

I do like the MS-01 workstation.

I’m so disappointed with the NVMe lane layout as you can’t event run a single x4 SSD at full speed, let alone a pair of them at x2 in a ZFS mirror. I really want to use a mirrored pair of Intel / Solidigm D7-5620 U.2 SSDs for training AI workloads but no way if they have uneven I/O. I would have been happy with them both at x2 and hit the checkout button.

:) The MS-01 has a very questionable design; a lot of high-performance parts are squeezed waaaay too close together. The result is something that has great specs, but also has a tendency to fail quickly due to consistent overheating if used heavily.

The downside to me for the MS-01 is the Intel chip is not a uniform chip. this is where I would choose the MS-A2 over the MS-01. However, in terms of value, i think the MS-01 is still probably the best value out there right now.

MS-01, unfortunately, can only fit the 7mm U.2 form factor unless you modify the chassis. So, I had to settle for the largest 7mm U.2 drives(also because I cannot afford the Solidigm one), which are at the size of 15.36 TB.

It's an interesting bit of hardware with some very specific strengths, but also some real constraints depending on how you actually plan to use it (virtualisation, storage, routing, etc.).

After spending meaningful time with it, the reality is more specific: it is excellent in one particular role, and much less convincing in several others.

Buy the MS-01 when those capabilities solve a specific problem; otherwise, a simpler mini PC will likely be easier and more economical.

Just looking at the specs there make me happy I have 3x ms-01 running as a proxmox cluster instead.

Their customer service is complete shit. Love their devices but they are super scummy.

The MS-01's iGPU has been pretty capable with transcoding and small Ollama models.
