The Browning HP5 ULTRA is the successor to the legendary HP5. After the third firmware update it returned to the very top, and its true 1440p video is among the best we have tested in trail cameras. We currently run it long-term at several sites and plan to switch over to it completely.

The case design of the Spec Ops HP5 is exceptional and the camera feels sturdy and well-built. The strap and python cable are threaded through a steel bracket affixed to the case. Most manufacturers use plastic. The HP5 has a threaded slot on the bottom for a Slate River Mount and the battery compartment and SD card slot are both easily accessible.

As a wildlife enthusiast, I've tested many trail cameras, but the Browning Recon Force Elite HP5 surpasses them all. The upgraded model replaces the popular HP4 and even outshines the amazing Recon Force Advantage. It's no wonder Browning is a leader in wildlife technology! I've only had this out for 3 weeks behind my house and so far I have to say I'm impressed. Very good video quality and so far the batteries are holding up. That is a huge factor for me. Here's day and night footage, and I captured a Bobcat stalking a Gray Squirrel. Let me know what you think about the quality of the video from this model camera.

I think the quality is just out of this world. Um I'm sure like the um all the media and TV channels use these cameras on their wildlife programs as well. So yeah, it's got five radiant lights. I'll start on the outside. It's got the great camouflage. Um it's got a door hinge here. It's got the usual screw thread at the bottom.

I have not found any trail camera (at least within my budget) that can beat the video and sound quality of the Browning Recon Force Elite HP5. Check out the focus and audio caliber in this one minute video clip of a young male coyote. If you have a camera that beats this, please let me know in the comment section so I can check it out!

We like this lens a lot since it allows us to get a view of more animal in tight sets. The images are not exactly the same — the new HP5 has a slightly narrower field of view. I believe this is because the final image is “cropped” — and only uses 4.1 Pixels of the available 5.1 MPixels on the sensor.

Comparisons to the iPhone for brightly lit scenes still show a gap, but for animals in more typical trail camera settings, the HP5 Ultra with the third generation firmware does a fairly good job. This is reassuring news for camera trappers used to the high video quality from Browning Recon Force and Spec Ops models. This firmware is available now from Browning. See the description for a link.

Image quality for these cameras is excellent, especially in capturing movement at 60 FPS.For our work, we’d rather have FHD resolution at 60 FPS vs. QHD (or even 4K) at 30FPS or slower.

Bottom line is that the hardware (image sensor + controller) for this new camera is a step up, but firmware issues, even after Browning’s immediate firmware update, are dragging down image quality.
