## Frequently asked questions

### Who is the Insta360 X5 for?

Anyone who wants a 360 camera. It is ranked fourth on our action cameras board and is the top 360 model, in A tier, on the best 360-degree image quality in the class, excellent stabilization, high-quality stitching and a large app ecosystem. Its one weakness in the research is firmware lag compared to GoPro. If you do not need 360 footage, a normal action camera is simpler to shoot and edit, and the DJI Osmo Action 6 in S tier is the pick.

### Is the Insta360 X5 waterproof?

Yes, the body is waterproof without a case to a depth that covers swimming and shallow snorkelling. 360 cameras are harder to seal than boxy action cameras because of the two exposed lens domes and the seams around them, so for anything deeper use the maker's dive case, which also corrects the stitching underwater. Rinse it in fresh water after salt or chlorine and dry the lenses with a soft cloth.

### How long does the Insta360 X5 last?

The research lists no cons against it and credits Insta360 with fixing the classic 360 ownership flaw, the fixed and permanently vulnerable lens domes of the Insta360 X4, which is the main reason that camera fell to F tier. Its large app ecosystem also counts for long-term ownership, and the research rates its software ahead of the GoPro Max 2 on that score. The caveat is firmware that lags GoPro's cadence.

### Should I buy the Insta360 X5 or the Insta360 X4?

Buy the Insta360 X5. The research says the Insta360 X4, now in F tier, is superseded by the Insta360 X5's better sensors and better low light, and carries fixed lens domes that the newer camera replaced. The older model is only a sensible buy at a deep discount, because at anywhere near Insta360 X5 money you are paying for the more fragile design.

### How do I edit Insta360 X5 footage?

Shoot everything, then choose the framing afterwards. The camera records the full sphere, and in the phone or desktop app you drag the view to follow the action, set keyframes for the camera path and export a normal flat video. The research rates the app ecosystem as large and the stitching as high quality, so the seam between the two lenses is rarely visible. Budget time for editing, because this reframing step is the price of the format.

## What this tier means

- A: Excellent. Strongly recommended, beaten only by the very best.

## How to read this

- Each category is researched in four independent runs, one per lens (expert consensus, value, reliability, community pulse). Every run ranks a board of candidates that deliberately includes products buyers cross-shop but should avoid. Placements score on a ranked ladder (LP), and tiers are derived from LP, so no tier is ever assigned by hand.
- LP is this product's points on its own category ladder. It is comparable within a category and not across categories.
- Link status reports what our pre-publication link check found when it fetched the cited URL. It says nothing about the quality of the review.
- A citation with no usable link is listed rather than dropped, and is excluded from the counted total above.
