## Verdict

A genuinely well-built machine that still runs forever, which is why it outranks the remaining traps, but it is coasting: superseded by the 99Ci in every current ranking, with no outlet naming it a top pick today. Buy the 99Ci.

## For

- Genuinely well-built machine with a long service life
- Among the five best shredders Consumer Reports found in 2026 testing
- Proven dependable mid-range cross-cut
- On Consumer Reports' current five-best shredders list
- 16-sheet cross-cut capacity

## Against

- Previous generation of the 99 series, outclassed by the 99Ci's newer jam-proof feed
- No current expert guide names it a top pick
- Cross-cut security is outclassed by the micro-cut models ranked above it
- An earlier-generation design now outclassed on security and runtime by Fellowes' own LX220 and 99Ci
- Missing safety features

## Flagged as one to avoid

This product entered 5 of 11 runs as one buyers cross-shop but should not buy, rather than as a pick. It is published here rather than dropped.

## What this tier means

- D: Weak. Hard to recommend when better options cost similar money.

## How to read this

- Each category is researched in four independent runs, one per lens (expert consensus, value, reliability, community pulse). Every run ranks a board of candidates that deliberately includes products buyers cross-shop but should avoid. Placements score on a ranked ladder (LP), and tiers are derived from LP, so no tier is ever assigned by hand.
- LP is this product's points on its own category ladder. It is comparable within a category and not across categories.
- Link status reports what our pre-publication link check found when it fetched the cited URL. It says nothing about the quality of the review.
- A citation with no usable link is listed rather than dropped, and is excluded from the counted total above.
